Hi, Thursday 1st October, it's the next GY Folk Night at the Blackfriars Tavern Great Yarmouth.

What is it? It's a folk night - of the people, by the people, for the people. There is no booked act or band, which means you make it what it is.

How does it work?

1.You turn up with your singing voice, or your spoken words, or your instrument, or with your listening ears.

2.They go round the room and ask if you want to do something, you can say "yes" or "not tonight" or "not yet", there is no pressure.

3.If yes, then you do your thing

4.They ask the next person. When they get to the end, they start again with the first person.

There is a break and we do some complimentary snacks after the half way point.

Last table gone now - all booked up, sorry.

It’s that Tuesday again. The last one of the month, which means quiz night at The Blackfriars Tavern.

As usual, the pub is very nearly full — but we’ve had a last-minute cancellation, which means there’s one single table available for Tuesday 28th September. If you’ve been meaning to come along and haven’t managed to book yet, now’s your chance. Message us if you’d like it.

The quiz gets going properly from 7:30pm, so come a little earlier to get settled. Friendly, relaxed, and just challenging enough to spark a gentle disagreement on the way home. Teams of up to 4 welcome.

As always, normal food service of pies and bowls of chips is suspended on quiz night, with last orders at 6pm. The courtyard will be open if the weather plays along.

There's something special about b**r served the old way — straight from a wooden barrel, on gravity, the way it's been done for centuries.

Right now at The Blackfriars Tavern, we have a small wooden cask from Ampersand Brewery filled with their Wh**ky Barrel Aged Stout · 5.4% ABV. This is proper "b**r from the wood" — traditional real ale served on gravity direct from the barrel, straight out of the cellar.

The wh**ky barrel ageing gives this stout a depth and character you just don't get from a standard cask. There's something about the wood that softens and enriches the b**r, adding gentle oak notes and a whisper of the spirit that came before it. It's a slow, patient sort of drink — something worth taking your time over.

It's available now, while stocks last. And with a small cask like this, stocks really won't last long.

Ask at the bar, find a quiet corner, and enjoy a proper pint of something a little different.

Ampersand Brewery's Wh**ky Barrel Aged Stout (5.5% ABV) is pouring at Blackfriars — served on gravity from a wooden barrel in the traditional way. While stocks last.

It is also home to passionate landlords, too, by all accounts, for the Blackfriars Tavern won Camra c***r pub of the year in 2025. This is all the more remarkable given the pub was derelict a little over five years ago. Today, this solid Victorian pub is wearing its win with pride, as it should, with more than 30 different traditional c***rs available, including a big focus on local Norfolk makers."
