Beneath this very ordinary Sainsbury’s car park in Great Yarmouth lay the bodies of hundreds and perhaps even thousands of people.

They are victims of the Bubonic Plague who were buried here some 400 years ago.

The modern day supermarket sits just outside the town walls and back in 1579 it was open ground, the location is important because the towns residents wanted the bodies buried outside the walls because they believed so called bad air (miasma) emanating from the decomposing bodies was spreading the disease.

So next time you do your weekly shop here you’ll know you’re standing on top of an incredible dark historic secret
