(1178)

Gretna Hall, historic marriage house is part of our fourth generation family business, which has been at the heart of Gretna Green weddings since 1885. Gretna Hall was built in 1710 as the manor house for Gretna Estate and later became a coaching inn in 1825, the first official stop in Scotland for traveling stagecoaches and private carriages. The Hall is one of two historic wedding venues in Gret

na Green frequented by runaways desperate to marry but forbidden to do so back home. Today it stands as a 97 bedroom hotel offering all the modern facilities within a traditional setting welcoming all guests; whether staying for leisure, weddings, corporate or group travel, you will find a warm welcome awaits. Also situated within the hotel is our Anvil Bar & Restaurant.

✨ Did you know Gretna Hall has been celebrating love stories for over 300 years? ✨

Built in 1710 by local landowner William Maxwell, this historic manor quickly became a favourite for aristocratic couples looking to elope, drawn by Scotland’s famously lenient marriage laws.

By the early 19th century, Gretna Hall joined the Famous Blacksmiths Shop as one of Gretna Green’s iconic wedding venues. Known for hosting spontaneous and romantic marriages (once described as 'better-class' elopements!), it also welcomed countless travellers as a bustling stagecoach stop between England and Scotland.

Today, Gretna Hall continues this romantic tradition, cherished by couples worldwide as the perfect place to tie the knot.

The Queensbury Clayton at Gretna Hall is a beautiful manor suite with a traditional arched window offering views of the gardens and Gretna Green Parish Church. Inspired by the love story of Lord Archibald Drumlanrig and Caroline Clayton, who eloped to Gretna Hall in 1840, the suite embodies the romance and spirit of a timeless love story.

Did you know that back in the 17th century, Gretna was known by another name? 🤔

This land was part of the parish of Graitney, and the area was made up of Springfield and Rigg - our neighbouring villages at Gretna Green. Long before it became commonly known as Gretna, or before Gretna Green became famous for runaway weddings!

The name Graitney may come from the words "Great Knowe", which describes a hill near the church (pictured below and visible from our Gretna Hall bedrooms).

"I think I've found my match." 💍

Jenn and Paul first connected on Match.com back in 2012, only to realise they already knew each other from around town. After months of chatting and a first date at IKEA, their love story began.

Marriage was always on their minds, but after Paul lost his mum, it was hard to picture the day without her. Then they found Gretna Green, and everything fell into place.

On 19th April 2019, they tied the knot with just the two of them, a romantic ceremony in the Courtyard, and two nights in the Queensbury Clayton Suite at Gretna Hall. It was perfect… even after a moment of panic when a charm from Jenn’s late nan went missing, only to be safely returned by reception. 💖

They still flick through their wedding album, and every time, the magic of Gretna Green comes rushing back.
