It is time for a change.

After nearly 40 years it is time for Stay The Byres - formerly Executive Lettings - to close its doors on short term stays. We will no longer be taking bookings.

I have loved being part of this family business for the last 20 years but it is time for a new direction.

We have had the most wonderful guests from all over the world and it has been a pleasure to help every one of them with a temporary home from home.

Thank you to all of my clients whether one-time-only or repeat customers, you have all helped make a small business owner very grateful and just a little bit proud.

I have seen many other businesses post about Mental Health Awareness Week and this morning after a swim for my own mental health, I got to thinking about what we do at The Byres.

We have always felt that we offer something extra that enhances our guests’ wellbeing. Whether they are staying with us for business, away from home and family, or finding refuge from a turbulent housing market, The Byres is a kind of sanctuary. A home from home. And we hope that helps just a little bit.

I have been very quiet on here as in October we lost my uncle, Bruce, who lived at The Byres.

I have hesitated for a long time, wondering whether to post about this, not least because Bruce himself was such a private man. But every guest at The Byres will have met Bruce, and every current guest is missing him. He was our gentleman custodian, keeping an eye on everything. He made the yard look beautiful with his gardening skills, kept things spic-and-span with unnoticed care and was always available to help with a spare 50p for the dryer or a spare key to rescue those who locked themselves out.

Thank you to those previous and current guests who have written to let me know that his efforts were appreciated and that he is missed. The Byres isn't quite the same without him.

We have a new name!

But some things will remain the same. We are still offering fully-equipped cottages on flexible terms, with the same friendly team led by Jessica.

So you can still stay in comfort when you stay with us.

Number 2 is our next cottage coming available later this month.

Recently this cottage has been home to a family waiting for a new build house to be completed. We have helped many people in this situation this year while developers are suffering setbacks due to delays to supplies and other problems.

Hopefully we can offer some relief from the stress of moving house, until our guests finally get to settle in to their new home.

I have been reflecting on our origins and how, due to his own experiences travelling in the 1980s, long before Airbnb was conceived, my dad saw an opportunity to create a better experience for the business traveller and worked with my mum to make it a reality.

It has always been - and continues to be - a family business, which allows us to offer a personal service to all our clients. Caring for our guests, whatever the reason for their stay, is at the heart of what we do.

We have had several guests in recent months staying because they had building work going on at home. Alison and her partner came to The Byres when their cottage was left uninhabitable by flood damage and subsequent remedial work. Staying local meant that they could keep an eye on the builders; flexible terms meant they could stay as long as they needed to when the work inevitably overran.

I love taking a little bit of stress out of guests’ lives by offering a place to stay, and love it even more when we get a note of thanks like this.

With the Chancellor’s announcement today that the stamp duty holiday will be extended, those hoping to complete a deal in time to take advantage may like to know that The Byres can offer a flexible stop-gap between houses.

Our cottages can offer a home-from-home and some respite from the stress of the chain. We anticipate having some availability from April, so get in touch for a chat if you would like to come and stay.

We have more guests than usual staying with us this Christmas, and it is lovely to see the cottages decorated and made festive. Whatever each bubble is doing to celebrate, I hope that everyone feels happy at home.
