Mendham Mill

Mendham Mill Once one of the largest watermills on the River Waveney, Mendham Mill now offers holidaymakers a choice of five luxurious holiday cottages.

Mendham Mill has been shaped by over 1000 years of milling: a mixture of natural and man-made landscape as millers sought to harness the power of the river. The grounds themselves are amazing: teeming with wildlife. There is a wonderful variety of gardens, from the old walled kitchen garden (now the garden for 'The Lodge' cottage) with climbing roses and old fruit trees to the more recently plante

d Mill Race Cottage garden - a true plantsman's delight. Having created five luxurious cottages in the grounds of their home Nick and James now love to share this East Anglian gem with others.

For the fifth time this year we welcomed a ‘plein air’ painting group to Mendham Mill. It’s always exciting to see artists at work in the grounds just as the young Sir Alfred Munnings would have been, over 130 years ago. Guests staying here were able to watch the creative process from start to finish. Great weather: sunny but not too hot.

At some point next year we hope to display some of the finished works from the many artists who have painted in the past couple of year. Watch this space for details.

Photos captured by a guest last week who got up early to watch the sunrise. What would you see if you got up early? Stay in one of our cottages and you might see mornings like this. Enjoy wild swimming, explore the river in one of our canoes, fish, or just relax.

This photograph 1) of our bathing spot taken this morning captures the stillness of the countryside. The river really is the lifeblood of Mendham Mill. For over 1000 years it powered the 2) waterwheel which ground corn into flour. And now it keeps everything green when so much of the countryside is parched. 3) North Meadow is encircled by the river and is looking so verdant this morning too. Proximity to water has also helped some of the cottage gardens like 4) part of Mill Race Cottage garden.

27 years old, and he still likes coming home 😀 Our son had friends staying this weekend as part of a late birthday celebration. Swimming, canoeing and birthday cake.

A fantastic place to grow up, Mendham Mill is also a great place for a holiday.

130 years after an 18 year old Alfred Munnings painted the young Will Saxby fishing at the rear of the mill, we welcomed some of Will’s descendants to Mendham Mill today to plant a tree in his memory.

Will’s father was the Munnings family’s groom. The Munnings family, who will have known Will from infancy, must have been fond of their groom and his son because Alfred Munnings’ mother kept this painting and was listed as its owner when it was exhibited in a Munnings retrospective in Norwich in 1928.

Ready and waiting for you. Did you know we have canoes and a paddle board available for guests in our holiday cottages to explore the river? And after you’ve been canoeing we’ve a perfect spot for a bit of wild swimming. There’s an outdoor hot shower too near the swimming platform for afterwards.

A cuckoo has added to the spring birdsong and will provide musical accompaniment until July when he’ll fly away until next year. We look forward to returning guests, whether they arrive by car or on the wing 😀

If canoeing is new to you, we can give you some instruction. For many of our guests, this is the first time in a canoe. We have four canoes for exploring the river, both upstream and downstream and we think this is one of the most beautiful stretches of the River Waveney. This photo, taken today, shows a family setting off to explore.
