The estate owner, Cathra, up early to catch a glimpse of the 5am full moon, lunar eclipse at Borve. Apparently the best places to view were going to be Skye & Harris, strange as that may sound ☁️ ☁️

We’ve not had the mainland heatwave 🔥 Although we’ve had plenty guests who have come from far & wide to escape the hot weather, from abroad & closer to home.

All that being said, this last week has been a welcome change ☀️

After over 130 years service at Borve Lodge Estate, our beautifully crafted loch angling boats have finally had to be retired. This season has proved to be one too far and we had to take them out of the water in the early summer.

The last in a long line of owners at Borve Lodge, since the vessels first came into service on Fincastle and Laxdale Lochs in the 1890’s, we looked after these venerable models of grace, design, durability and angling practicality for as long as we possibly could. After they took a bit of a bashing early in the summer during a gale, we realised that they were not viably repairable any more.

We apologise to all anglers who are understandably shocked and feeling somewhat bereft, as are we, but we ask for forbearance as we seek out a suitably respectable alternative to be in place by next season.

In the meantime we are considering what kind honourable lasting memorial we can make of these remarkable pieces of angling and of island history.

Thank you to anglers for their patience and consideration. Watch this space...

Something extraordinary is happening on Taransay. Every hour, on the hour, sensors located around the island are gathering data on sea temperature, as part of a network right across the Atlantic. This is the work of Dr Rui Seabra, a Portuguese marine ecologist from Biopolis-CIBIO. He has recently returned to Taransay to both collect sensor data from already installed sensors, and put in some new ones. Now, Taransay has nearly 50 sensors in place in 15 locations. This marries in with Rui’s larger network, of more than 3,000 sensors all around the Atlantic Ocean.

Once in place, the sensors collect data for 15 years. It’s a magnificent project, giving empirical data that will greatly contribute to our knowledge of the state of the world’s oceans, and should yield insights into how temperature changes may affect marine biodiversity. And within the network, Taransay will perform a strong role as a central data collection point.

’Taransay is a perfect place for us to experiment,’ explains Rui. 'It is the right size, being sizeable, but also accessible. It has a complexity of environments, both exposed and sheltered, within an addressable area. It gives us the best opportunity to test various hypotheses, that are hard to address elsewhere. And its just an incredible place

Mesmerising watching the peaty hill water entwine with the waves, watching the waves push back & together they join 🌊

Some rain last night, took until the afternoon for the burn to fill up and come gushing down to Borve Beach.
