Rotavive (Satellite of the Rotary Club of Hastings) arranged a day out for local children to Hastings Crazy Golf with the help of the St Leonards Academy SENCO department on 18th July 2023. Rotavive funded the whole day including golf, food, and ice cream, with the academy putting on the transport and arranging the children’s attendance.
The St Leonards’ Academy is a main-stream secondary school with a Special facility for children on the Autistic spectrum and those with a Physical Disability.
As the St Leonards Academy is one of the only schools in the area with such an advanced SENCO department, they can fulfil the educational needs of children from the local area including St Leonards, Hastings, and even Battle.
Gayle Benet (Hastings Rotary Club President) Zoe Rushton (Chair of Rotavive) and Verna Irvin (Rotavive member) were joined by 20 students and 5 teachers for a full afternoon of Pirate Adventure golf. The students did not let their disabilities stand in the way of good old-fashioned competition and it wasn’t long before the hole in ones started to make an appearance. One of the best parts of the days was seeing the student encourage each other, cheering each other on and showing the children who had never been to golf before how to hold their clubs etc. The day ended with some fish and chips and of course an ice cream on the seafront. All of the children enjoyed the day and left with a massive thank you and the biggest smiles.
Rotative used the remaining charity funds to pay for 260 adventure golf tickets for students. The academy handed these out in the last assembly before the summer holidays as a “well done” to students who have shown hard work and overcome challenges over the school year.
Due to the success of the day and the request from students “can we do this again next year please” Rotavive will be planning a fundraising event to facilitate this in the near future.
