Who gives a crap?.... we do! The team behind this product wanted to make a difference. They started Who Gives A Crap when they learnt that 2.3 billion people across the world don't have access to a toilet. That's roughly 40% of the global population and means that around 289,000 children under five die every year from diarrhoea related diseases caused by poor water and sanitation. That's almost 800 children per day, or one child every two minutes. https://uk.whogivesacrap.org/

Inspired by Joe, a creative employee who left this World too early in 2019, we transformed a patch of brambles outside our offices into a green space for staff to enjoy a moment in nature. We wanted to revive this space and increase the diversity of flora and fauna. We believe the closer you are to nature, the happier you'll be.

Well haven't you grown! Things have really changed since I was in last in work. Working remotely means I don't see it grow day to day anymore, but it's great seeing the changes.

Day 4 & 5: Well day 4 was a washout! It rained heavily all day so work was put on hold until today, day 5, where the sun came out and the garden started to take more form. In went the wooden poles to form a backdrop to the seating area. The edging for the path is in, ready for the surfacing on Monday. The meadow grass was starting to be laid this afternoon. It doesn't look like much now but in a few weeks it should literally spring into life!

Day 3: The team spent the first part of the day preparing the ground and cutting some old pallet wrap card roll centres into smaller tubes to squeeze into the giant bug wall. We need quite a bit of bug friendly material for the wall. Once the reclaimed railway sleepers arrived, they got to work on the all important steps which you can see bottom right. All cut by hand which is hard work at anytime, but in the cold and wet it's even harder. Medals in the post for them! 😄

Day 2: The pallet wall is up! The random patterns formed by the planks look great. The skip is already full of brambles and rubbish from years of people fly tipping at night. Sadly not much to recycle there. Mr Fox was seen a couple of times checking out what's going on. Behind the pallet wall is the railway line to London, so there's a natural wildlife motorway running right past our garden. Hopefully we'll get all kinds of visitors when it's done.

Day 1: Work finally started on our new green space this week! We've longed for an outdoor space away from the tarmac, brick & metal etc of our industrial HQ. This area of brambles will be turned into a seating area surrounded by meadow flowers, with a custom recycled pallet wall which will double as a giant bug hotel and living wall. We're aiming to be concrete-free, using recycled sleepers as steps to reach the space and hammering wood poles into the ground rather than set them in concrete. There will also be a space for composting 1500ltrs of organic waste. Part of our Green Initiatives for 2020, the resulting compost will be donated to the allotments down the road. We'll also have bird feeders, bird and bat houses and more to encourage a diverse range of life back to the area.
A space for clearing your mind, an idea inspired by a former employee who passed away last year. Joe's Garden.
