June and July are 'peak puffin time'. As usual for three months Skomer is hosting some 44,000 of these enchantingly sea birds which pair for life and return every April to nest in the same burrow. Because they spend almost all their lives at sea, they are delightfully tame and will allow humans to approach to within a few feet. Glebe House is a 10 minute drive from the ferry which takes 250 visitors to the island every day (booking tickets online is essential). Better still, Glebe House has discounted availability for most of June (£900 reduced to £720) and the first two weeks of the summer holiday (£1950 reduced to £1560). Just a reminder to any friends looking for a bit of light relief between now and Easter, my Pembrokeshire abode is available at discounted cheap winter prices. It is only five minutes walk to the Coastal Path and the pubs of Little Haven are only 20 minutes stroll further on. It sleeps up to 10 adults and accepts up to six dogs. It normally costs £500 for a week and £400 for a four-night break in winter, but between now and the end of March this has a further 20% discount to £400 and £320 respectively. I was listening this morning to 'Broadcasting House' (R4) where they had a piece about the relative costs of holidaying in the UK and abroad. They were generally comparing Cornwall with Majorca or Barcelona and the Continental destinations tended to come out cheaper. One price quoted was for a two-bedroom place near Padstow costing £1,400 for a week. Glebe House is closer to London, has the same climate, same waves and sleeps up to 10. I've just let it as a last-minute deal for £950 for the week of 10 - 17 August. It's currently available 7 - 21 September for £720. See

Update for puffin lovers! Glebe House has vacancies until 25 May and for the first week of the summer holidays (20 - 27 July). These are all prime puffin weeks on Skomer - one of Britain's greatest wildlife spectacles! The 'clowns of the sea' leave by early August, but there are still summer holiday vacancies for human visitors after that.

Oddly, the house has lots of availability in both the summer holidays and April/May - it's still very good value for money for what it is (and there are now 20% discounted prices over the next two months).

It's a funny old year, with Glebe House proving a popular holiday destination between now and the autumn, but there are some inexplicable gaps in the diary. It is unoccupied for six weeks from mid-April to late May, for example, and four weeks of the summer holiday are also yet to be let. This is a surprise because to my mind these are some of the best weeks of the year. Spring often boasts some of the best Welsh weather and it is also a prime time to visit Skomer to see the puffins - one of Britain's greatest wildlife spectacles. In high summer the sea, beaches and weather can be superb and, as always, Pembrokeshire is never over-crowded.
