43 Years ago today.
The Atlantic Conveyor was hit by Exocet Missiles, resulting in the loss of life and operational capability which has been well documented over the years.
Cornish Freemason, W.Bro Nick Martin PPJGW, was on board as a serving Royal Naval Chief Petty Officer Airman (Aircraft Handler).
As the conflict erupted, CPOA(AH) Martin was instrumental in converting Atlantic Conveyor into an Aircraft Carrier; deploying onboard as the Ships Flight Deck Officer (FDO.)
W.Bro Nick will not accept the moniker of "Hero", however, his actions, in the face of his own demise, on this ill fated day, warranted him to be Mentioned in Despatches - the full citation and other eyewitness accounts detailing the extent of his bravery can be viewed in the pictures.
Nick continued to serve his country after leaving the Royal Navy, by playing a part in training future generations of Aircraft Handlers, as a member of staff for the Motor Transport Section at the RN School of Aircraft Handling (SAH); now called the Royal Naval School of Flight Deck Operations (RNSFDO). He also served terms as Mayor of Helston in Cornwall, and is still the Naval liaison, plus very active member of the Aircraft Handlers Association.
W.Bro Nick was initiated into Penwith Lodge No 8538 in 1984 and has remained a committed Mason ever since, by being a member of several Craft Lodges and Progressive Orders. He holds the Provincial rank of Past Provincial Junior Grand Warden.
Members of Penwith have attended Nicks Presentations on the Conflict, created by the expertise of Martin Brockman and narrated by Nick himself.
Pictures and citation are from various sources, provided by W.Bro Nick Martin and W.Bro Martin Brockman in 2022.
