🔥 NO FIRES AT BLAKEDEAN 🔥

We know that the vast majority of our visitors are sensible, well-seasoned outdoor people who know how quickly conditions can change on the moors… but we thought we’d just leave this here, just in case! 👀

⚠️ With the UK Government warning of a very high risk of wildfires, we’re asking everyone visiting Blakedean and the surrounding countryside to take extra care.

🚫 Please, no fires, disposable BBQs, firepits or anything else that could create a flame or spark at Blakedean.

The ground and vegetation are incredibly dry, and it only takes one small flame or stray spark for a serious wildfire to develop.

🌿 Just enjoy the outdoors.

If you see smoke or signs of a fire, call 999 immediately and give as accurate a location as possible.

Please share and help us look after Blakedean, our moorland and our local community. 💚⚜️

Sorry about the delay, here’s the story behind this mysterious “witch” at Blakedean? 🧙‍♀️🇵🇱

Many visitors to Blakedean have spotted this unusual wooden carving and assumed it’s simply a witch. In fact, it represents Baba Jaga, one of the most famous figures in Polish folklore.

Unlike the witches of Western fairy tales, Baba Jaga is a legendary woodland character who represents adventure, wisdom, courage and the challenges we all face on life’s journey. It’s no surprise that Polish Scouts often use her as a symbol of outdoor adventure and resilience.

This carving holds a special place in the history of Blakedean Scout Hostel. It was gifted to us by the Scouts of Starachowice, Poland, following their visits in 2008 with Todmorden Scouts. This exchange created lifelong friendships, broke down cultural barriers and demonstrated that Scouting truly is a worldwide family.

The driving force behind this remarkable partnership was our dear friend, Dr Allan Lawrence, whose passion for international Scouting helped forge a friendship that continues to this day. Allan’s experiences with scouting forged the believe that young people from different countries could become friends the moment they met, united by the shared values of Scouting. His vision has left a lasting legacy in Todmorden, Starachowice and here at Blakedean.

The inscription reads “48th Salesian Scout Rally – 2006”, commemorating the event from which this special gift originated.

So next time you’re staying at Blakedean, look up and say hello to Baba Jaga. She’s much more than a carved figure on the wall she’s a symbol of friendship, adventure and the enduring bonds that Scouting creates across the world.

Have you ever taken part in an international Scout camp or exchange? We’d love to hear your memories in the comments! 🌍⚜️

Please tag anyone who was involved in the Todmorden–Starachowice exchange visit?

Anyone who’s visited Blakedean since 2008 will probably recognise this carving and know exactly where it’s hanging!

Many people think she’s the Pendle Witch… but she’s actually from a little further afield.

Do you know:
🧙‍♀️ Who she is?
📍 Where she’s really from?
📖 What’s the story behind her?

Leave your answer in the comments below – no cheating! 😉

We’ll reveal what we know about her in a few days.
