I am absolutely thrilled to announce Velveteen has been shortlisted for another award! The The Yorkshire Post Tourism Awards - Holiday Rental of the Year category. We are so delighted to be shortlisted for these prestigious awards. Thank you so much! And thank you to all of our gorgeous guests (and their doggies!) over the last 3 years. We take a huge amount of pleasure in helping create special memories here in Velveteen and Helmsley - it’s a responsibility we don’t take lightly. Apple pie with apples from the garden for pudding today. The pastry effort is shockingly bad. I don’t know why but it always just falls apart when I roll it and attempt to transfer to the dish. What am I doing wrong? Chilled for 45 mins, quantities to the letter. Pastry just doesn’t like me. But I love it. And I know it’ll taste good despite its appearance!

We have BIG news! The Velveteen Bath House has been selected as a finalist in the ✨ Visit York ✨ Tourism Awards (Self-catering category) Just found out today and we are thrilled to bits!! Even to be shortlisted is a huge honour - it feels amazing to have our hard work recognised in terms of the quality of the accommodation but more importantly the care and attention we give to every guest. So proud! Winners will be announced at the awards ceremony in York next March. Watch this space!

We’ve just been to MIMA art gallery in Middlesbrough - the host of this year’s I enjoyed the work of all 4 artists but this installation by Kira Freije was something else. Haunting figures made from steel and aluminium. Loved it.

We have a rare few days free this week at Velveteen so we’ve taken the opportunity of zhuzhing up the garden as well as giving the house another deep clean. I did not anticipate the effort involved in replanting pots this size. The weight of the old shrub’s rootball was phenomenal! Sadly the previous occupants were victims of the long hot summer ☀️
