We are so lucky to live in the North York Moors in a Dark Skies Area !
When did you last stand in awe, enjoyingthe glory of amazing dark skies or witness nature’s intriguing nocturnal wonderworld? The popular Dark Skies Festival (13 February to 1 March) offers enticing opportunities to experience a world we normally shut out as we head indoors and close the curtains. There are many events across Yorkshire Dales National Park and North York Moors National Park
You could join one of the Festival’s events and see familiar beauty spots like Malham Tarn, take on a new air of mystery after-dark.
In the Yorkshire Dales the programme includes perennial favourites such as the star party at Keld with Richard Darn, and new stargazing events at Meadow Falls - Camping, Glamping and Touring, Green Howards Museum, Yorebridge House, and the The Courtyard Dairy
In the North York Moors, there’s a new observatory, the Dark Skies Station, opening at Danby Lodge National Park Centre and an introduction to an ancient Dutch ritual called dusking when people would sit together, resist putting on the room lights (and put mobile phones down!), and mark the end of the working day as twilight approached.
Walking through the countryside at night is special as all your senses sharpen up when you can’t rely just on visual clues and suddenly the sounds and smells take on a new resonance. Joining one of the Festival’s guided walks from spots like Sutton Bank, Kettlewell, Malham, Clay Bank or Helmsley, is an ideal chance to savour the experience.
Most events are bookable so it's worth looking at the programme and securing your place as soon as possible - https://www.darkskiesnationalparks.org.uk/
