It’s time for the ‘temporary’ campsite, (that originally, was set up just for the solar eclipse in 1999), to close its doors, ‘Gateboy’ to hang up his rainbow flag & the Barbies to be able to retire: (albeit rather disgracefully, in an alternative art installation in Falmouth!)
Our lives have always ‘evolved’, rather than being shaped by conscious decisions or business plans & now, the closure of the campsite is part of that evolutionary process. In the early days, we had fields full of happy campers, who were delighted & relieved to find a gay-friendly environment in the middle of nowhere. The growing development of equality in our society is, of course, to be celebrated & it means that anyone can go anywhere for their holidays. Over recent years a lot of our campers preferred to stay in places where they could have guaranteed sunshine & a roof over their heads instead of canvas. And we too, after 16 years of spending all our time working on the campsite, whilst having a multitude of buckets in the house, to catch the leaks, feel we need to put our energy into repairing the roof over our own heads too!
In the last year, without the campsite, Out in the Open really has gone to the dogs! Our dog exercise fields have rapidly been filled with happy, smiley, bouncy canines & relieved owners who have found somewhere where their four-legged friends can play safely. There are now more canines than there ever were campers! We have also introduced a new dog sport: Hoopers, which is more inclusive than agility, as any dog can do it.
Out in the Open has had a very colourful & vibrant history & to celebrate this, over the next few weeks, we aim to post a series of albums of the campsite through the years. (Permission for photos was given at the time, but if you'd prefer not to be on Facebook, please private message us & we'll happily remove the image). We have had a lot of laughs, made some great friends & have a wealth of memories & we hope you do too. Indeed, we will look back on all the stories & fun times we’ve had - & maybe even write the book! We’d like to thank all of you for being part of that history & invite you to post below any photos of your special moments here. We’re not disappearing & this page will remain open, so you can keep up with what we’re up to & chat to us. And maybe if you are holidaying in Cornwall with four-legged friends, give us a ring, book a slot in our field & come over to play! If you’d like to keep up with our adventures visit www.facebook.com/beanosballpark to see where life takes us next.
We’d like to wish you all many more happy holidays, wherever they may be & if you’re passing, it would be great to catch up. We won’t be putting your tent up, but you might get a cup of tea! ☺
