🔷⚒️ POINTS IN OR POINTS OUT? THE STORY BEHIND THE MASONIC RING ⚒️🔷
A Masonic ring is more than just a piece of jewelry. For many Brethren, it represents a commitment to the principles of Freemasonry, a reminder of the obligations we have taken, and a symbol of the Brotherhood we are proud to belong to.
But there’s a question that has sparked conversations among Masons for generations:
💍 When wearing your Square and Compasses ring, do you point them toward yourself or toward the world?
🔹 POINTS IN — Some Brethren choose to wear their rings with the points facing toward themselves. They view it as a personal reminder to continually examine their own actions, hold themselves accountable, and live by the principles they have promised to uphold. Before judging another man, a Mason should first look inward and ensure he is practicing what he professes.
🔹 POINTS OUT — Other Brethren wear their rings with the points facing outward, displaying the emblem to the world. For them, it is a way to openly identify with the Craft, show pride in their Masonic membership, and represent the values of Brotherly Love, Relief, and Truth wherever they go.
Of course, these are personal interpretations, not universal definitions. The direction a Brother wears his ring does not determine his character, his dedication to the Craft, or the quality of the Mason he is.
⚖️ So, which way is the right way?
The truth is that there is no universal Masonic rule requiring every Brother to wear his ring with the points facing in or out. Customs and personal traditions may differ between jurisdictions, lodges, and individual Masons.
Some were taught one way by their mentors or the Brothers who raised them. Others developed their own preference over time, and some may not have given it much thought until another Mason asked the question!
At the end of the day, the ring itself is only a symbol. What matters most is the man who wears it and whether his conduct reflects the lessons of the Craft. We can wear the Square and Compasses proudly, but we must also strive to practice what they represent in our daily lives.
A ring cannot make a man a better Mason. His actions, integrity, humility, and treatment of others are what truly matter.
