The rooms are individually secure, but can be interconnected, making it ideal for larger or mixed groups and families. Carrshield Camping Barn is located within the 18thCentury former Barney Craig Mine Shop, on the outskirts of Carrshield. This used to be the largest mine shop in south Northumberland. It is a Scheduled Ancient Monument and was at risk of collapsing beyond repair. With funding from
Historic England and the Heritage Lottery Fund, the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty Partnership renovated the building using traditional methods and existing materials, converting the upper floors into a basic Camping Barn. It is now owned and managed by Allen Valleys Enterprise Limited, for the benefit of the local community. The rooms are individually secure but can be interconnected, making it ideal for larger or mixed groups and families. The Camping Barn is ideally located for exploring the Northumberland and Cumbria county borders, Hadrian’s Wall, Weardale, and Teesdale. The mining museums at Killhope and Nenthead are also conveniently close by. The long-distant footpath Isaac’s Tea Trail passes close to the building. For those wishing a challenge, the Camping Barn is also convenient for those taking part in the Allendale Challenge. Nestled in the upper reaches of the West Allen Valley on the outskirts of the small village of Carrshield, the accommodation offers something for almost everybody. Peace and tranquillity on-site and in the surrounding area. Surrounded by vast moorlands that abound in wild flora and fauna, some of which are endangered such as Golden Plover, Curlew, Twite, and others. See our photograph albums for just a few examples. The location lends itself to walkers of all types, those that wish to yomp all day as well as those content to amble carelessly along the lower streams. Cyclists can use the accommodation as a base for exploring the quiet country lanes in this part of the North Pennines AONB. The Barn is only a short distance from the popular Coast to Coast cycle route. At the end of the day relax in the valley with the sound of water tumbling over boulders in the adjacent river, whilst you enjoy the amazing starry sky above.
