St Oswald's Farm

St Oswald's Farm A beautiful award winning holiday cottage in the heart of Northumberland, offering luxury 5* accommodation for two. We hope you enjoy it as much as we do!

Situated on Hadrian's Wall and near to Hexham, the National Park and perfectly located for enjoying all Northumberland has to offer. Heavenfield Cottage is a beautifully renovated farm building conversion on our family farm in the heart of Hadrian’s Wall Country. The cottage sits very uniquely on top of Hadrian's Wall itself and offers luxury 5 star and award winning self catering accommodation fo

r two. This working farm stocks over 1100 sheep and a herd of 120 cattle and has been in our family for over 50 years. We love where we live and what we do and in 2017 we diversified to something new, to something that would enable us to welcome guests to our beautiful location. The old farm building was converted to a stunning self catering cottage and we are now delighted to be able to offer guests the opportunity to enjoy all that makes St Oswald's Farm special. There is history all around us, not only are we located on the Hadrian's Wall National Trail, we are adjacent to our very lovely 'Heavenfield' the old cattle site of the Battle of Heavenfield which took place in 633 and in which stands St Oswald's Church. Heavenfield is also a preserved hay meadow and the end point of the long distance walking route, St Oswald's Way. Not only are we immersed in history here, we have the most fantastic views and our central location means we are ideally positioned to enjoy day trips to the whole of Northumberland from Hadrian's Wall, to the Northumberland National Park, the Dark Skies and the fantastic Northumberland coast, the magnificent castles, charming gardens and the many amazing visitor attractions. We are happy for guests to explore our farm and will happily recommend walks and even provide a map of the farm showing the best vantage points. We will gladly answer any questions you might have about our farm, our animals and recommend day trips and places of interest if you're struggling to choose from the huge choice. Within the cottage itself many of the original features remain, with beams, exposed stonework, cobbles outside and with stones from Hadrian's Wall itself within the construction, Heavenfield Cottage is immersed in history and you can even boast that you've slept on top of Hadrian's Wall. A modern and well equipped kitchen ensures self-catering is a pleasure and we know you'll feel at home in this luxurious yet comfortable and cosy cottage. Underfloor heating and a log burner means you'll be toasty and warm and a drying cupboard ensures you can dry out those muddy boots from a day's walking. The cottage has been equipped to a high standard with lots of home comforts to ensure your stay is as comfortable and luxurious as possible. We look forward to welcoming you here to St Oswald's Farm, where you will receive a friendly and personal welcome.

👋 Hello to all our new (and old) followers!

We've welcomed lots of new faces to our page recently, so I thought it was about time I re-introduced us properly.

We're Lorraine and John, and together we run St Oswald's Farm, a family farming business and holiday cottage in the heart of Northumberland, near Hexham and on top of Hadrian's Wall.

We farm across two farms, with our son Grant and his wife Megan working alongside John, and the three of them are the heart of the farming operation. You will see John on the farm when you stay here and he can usually be found somewhere on a tractor, tending to the livestock, or fixing something that has unexpectedly decided to break, and all ably assisted by two keen collies, Dot & Bea!

As for me, I'm the one behind Heavenfield Cottage, the changeovers, bookings, emails, social media, newsletters, website and the one tasked with the seemingly endless mountain of paperwork that comes with farming. If you've ever sent an enquiry, booked a stay or read one of our newsletters, then it's me you've been chatting to.

When our guests arrive, I always meet and greet but you'll also see John around the farm during your stay and he'll always say hello, and he's always more than happy to share a local recommendation or a story or two.

Through this page you'll find a little bit of everything: Northumberland inspiration, local walks, places to eat, farm life, seasonal updates, wildlife, history and, of course, the occasional cottage availability update.

Whether you've stayed with us before, are planning a visit, or simply enjoy following along from afar, we're delighted you're here.

We'd love to know, so tell us below, whereabouts you're following from? 👇

We’re often asked… which is the best month to visit Northumberland? 🌿

Honestly? Every season here feels completely different - and that’s part of the magic - as each season arrives we always think - this is our favourite, but then the next one arrives and shows us we love it just as much.

🌸 Spring brings lambs in the fields, lighter evenings, wildflowers and quieter walks before summer arrives.

☀️ Summer is for beach days, coastal sunsets, castle visits and long evenings spent outdoors.

🍂 Autumn turns the countryside golden, fills the forests with colour and makes cosy pub lunches and crisp walks feel even better.

❄️ Winter is all about dramatic skies, peaceful landscapes, dark starry nights and slowing down beside a warm fire after a day exploring.

There’s never really a wrong time to visit Northumberland - it just depends what kind of escape you’re looking for ✨
