Did you know that Hexham sits further north than the Mull of Galloway, the most southerly part of Scotland?

If you drive north from Hexham, it's a beautiful 38-mile journey through Northumberland National Park to Scotland. However, if you drive west to Carlisle then the border is only a few miles away.

We love our many Scottish visitors these days but that hasn't always been the case. In 1296, the Scots set fire to Hexham Priory destroying shrines, books and relics, but that wasn't the end of things! The next year, William Wallace ('Braveheart') and his forces destroyed what remained.

Between 1311 and 1331, Robert Bruce ravaged Hexham several times. The town was occupied and sacked by David II of Scotland's forces in 1346.

It’s really worth a visit!

Did you know, the exposed remains at Corbridge Roman Site (about 1.8 hectares or almost 4.5 acres) is only a tiny fraction of the Roman Town.

The exposed area that can be seen today would have been at the centre of the town, where Dere Street (the main road heading North) and the Stanegate (the main West road) meet.

The entirety of the site still exists, but has been levelled by agriculture over time. From aerial photographs and excavations from before the first World War, the site is known to cover around 15 to 20 hectares (37 to 49 acres) in the surrounding fields.

Why not come and see it for yourself, and visit Corbridge Roman Town on Saturdays and Sundays, open 10am to 4pm.
