‘It is spring, no leaves and 16 degrees’ a lovely 15 minute, (0.5 mile) walk to the The Butchers Arms a cosy pub with an excellent menu in the Old Plague Village of Hepworth. It’s an easy walk from the farm along a cobbled Mill Path. Hepworth village is steeped in History and mentioned in the Doomsday Book as well as being the most northerly place the plagued reached, splinting the village in two, look out for Barracks Fold, where the soldiers divided the village.

Snowmoon rising on cheesegate Nabb, one of the grounding things about the farm cottage is being able watch the moon as it casts shadows and peer through the windows as travels across the night sky from east to west.

Moon & Water by Mary Oliver

I wake and spend
the last hours
of darkness
with no one

but the moon.
She listens
to my complaints
like the good

companion she is
and comforts me surely
with her light.
But she, like everyone,

has her own life.
So finally I understand
that she has turned away,
is no longer listening.

She wants me
to refold myself
into my own life.
And, bending close,

as we all dream of doing,
she rows with her white arms
through the dark water
which she adores.

If you love sculpture and the outdoors, a must, 25 mins drive, 10mikes from the Farm Cottage.

Winter continues to shape YSP in striking and subtle ways, with sculptures dusted in snow and magnificent sunsets over the Park. Look out for the first signs of snowdrops emerging as you explore.

Warm up indoors, with must-see exhibitions in our four galleries and hearty seasonal dishes in our cafés.

The Farm, Hepworth & The Great Plague, 1665-1666. It’s very likely the oldest parts of the farm existed at the time of the Plague; Hepworth is a plague Village, a 20 minute walk and the most northerly point the pleagued reached.

Hepworth. Barrack Fold. In 1665 – 1666 the Great Plague struck England. It brought devastation in London, then spread across the country. Hepworth was the most northerly point that it reached. According to local legend it is supposed to have come in on cloth brought from London.

In an effort to save the village the residents split the village into two parts at Barracks Fold. Those that were infected remained isolated from the world, in one half. Thirteen of the residents died from the disease, which was a considerable percentage of the population in such a small village and thirteen trees were planted to remember them. The trees still stand today by the local football pitch. Two subsequently fell down and in 2004 replacements were planted at a small ceremony by Parish Councillor, Ruth Jackson. The end of the plague in Hepworth is still commemorated on the last Monday in June every year with Hepworth Feast.
