Our location is enviable!

Family run eco-hotel, bar, and restaurant serving good, honest, homemade food

~ All parties and special celebrations catered for, and all allergies too!

~ Homely, warm, friendly, Fawlty Towersesque. Our Hotel
We are a small, quirky, informal family-run hotel in Holyhead, Anglesey, admittedly somewhat Fawlty Towersesque, but we, and our customers, like it that way :) We took over the Boathouse wi

th 3 days notice in October 2023 (a shock to the system to say the least!!) and the hotel was in a bit of a mess, with lights hanging out, leaks, broken windows, broken furniture, a somewhat poor reputation, and dreadful online reviews!! We've made loads of improvements as quickly as we can (which isn't as fast as we'd like, but heigh-ho, what can you do when you're plummeted unexpectedly into a business that needs rebuilding?!!), with new furniture, new carpets, new paintwork, new menus, new windows and loads of eco-improvements. We've almost finished major improvements to our hotel rooms, with new carpets, furniture, beds, chairs, even light-fittings, and it's looking leaps and bounds better! We're situated on the Anglesey Coastal Path at the end of Newry Beach, so the views and walks are fab. Look out at Holyhead Breakwater, bobbing boats on the sea, and Holyhead Mountain, or take a stroll to the Breakwater Coastal Park, a SSSI, nature reserves, rugged cliffs with an abundance of wildlife, the Maritime Museum, and St. Cybi's Church, or hop in the car and visit South Stack Lighthouse, various standing stones, the hut circles, and much more. Our Restaurant
Our restaurant is open for food and functions. We serve good, honest, home-cooked, Mediterranean-inspired food and some traditional pub favourites at fair prices, and we cater for all dietary needs/intolerances. Furthermore, we pride ourselves for only using ingredients – every dish is made from scratch in our kitchen using fresh ingredients and quality products, i.e. nothing is pre-packaged, apart from the bread as it's not our forte! We also use local and Welsh suppliers and produce wherever possible. We cater for Special Birthdays, Celebrations, Christenings, Baby Showers, Gender Reveals and Wakes. Check out our buffets - https://www.facebook.com/61552535461798/videos/605525088589835 (hot buffets also available). We're also open for coach parties. Our Approach to Our Business
We approach our business with the environment, the local economy, and Wales firmly in mind! As such, our supply chain boasts many local suppliers and businesses; our processes and procedures are eco-conscious, and we’ve already replaced several pieces of kitchen equipment with more eco-friendly alternatives, installed solar panels, and replaced the boiler and loads of windows! In addition, our dishes are developed with consideration to electric and water usage, carbon miles, and sustainability. Many of our herbs are home-grown and the apples and pears from the Welsh fruit trees in our orchard have been made into pies and crumbles! Events
We have numerous regular events - Live Music, Open Mic and Jam Nights, Bingo, Charity Quizzes, and Seasonal Events for adults and children - follow us on FB or X to keep updated. Check out our Open Mic and Live Music events - https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61552535461798&sk=videos. Hoping to host you, please come armed with a sense of humour and don't expect the Ritz or the Waldorf! Big thanks,

The Boathouse Team

We’re often flummoxed by hotel guests, as many end up perplexed by mundane tasks because they don’t seem to possess what we/most people would probably deem simple life skills, such as using doors, windows, showers, radiators, or kettles.

Whether it’s an inability to lock/unlock doors, find a light switch, attempting to boil empty kettles and tripping several hotel rooms (with 1 empty-kettle-boiling guest emailing to ask for a refund because there was no electric!!), or leaving taps running/shower doors open whilst showering (if they’re able to fathom the shower!), resulting in flooding the room/s below/restaurant (once during a wedding ), and, again, tripping electrics in several rooms, you can’t help but wonder what these people do in their own home!? What makes all this worse is that the same guests that cause the problem, then kick off, and other guests their actions have affected also kick off! Fortunately, many people see the funny side when they realise things are beyond our control, but some don’t!

Much as we’d like to tell you the following are isolated incidents, unfortunately for us and fortunately/unfortunately for other hotel guests depending on their sense of humour and fondness of Fawlty Towers, instances like this happen far more frequently than we/you could ever imagine, leading us to ponder, firstly, whether the education system is and has been worse than we ever believed, and, secondly, whether there’s a gap in the market to provide a training course addressing how to enter a house or room, use a shower, or turn taps on and off…..

It’s also staggering how many guests can’t follow instruction. Aside from numerous no smoking signs, there’s a reason our “thank you for your booking” message and bedroom welcome booklets state that our new fire alarms are super-sensitive, and it’s for the same reason we reiterate this as we’re showing guests to rooms (we still do that ). Yet, people still try to smoke/vape, they meddle with fire alarm sensors, and, not only do they shower with the bathroom door open, they also turn extractor fans off (thanks to the wisdom of the authorities who insisted bathroom fans should have individual isolator switches) so the steam pours into the room and sets the alarm a-ringing; and then, surprise, surprise, the same culprits leave reviews complaining that the fire alarms kept going off!

Guests also complain it’s hot/cold, so we check their room and find the radiators are turned on/off, even though they said they're on/off. Then they complain it’s too hot and there’s no fans available, when if they opened the wardrobe or read the welcome booklet, they would find fans, as well as extra pillows and blankets. There are also extra keys, bath sheets, late night access instructions and emergency numbers for the hotel team (both also in the “thank you for your booking” message!), contact details for doctors, vets, etc., the internet access code, how to turn the shower on/off, and a whole heap more relevant info they may need.

Furthermore, guests often take it upon themselves to advise/tell you how to run a hotel, even though their pearls of wisdom make it blatantly obvious that hoteliership doesn’t fall within their realms of experience or knowledge.

When you’re confronted with the imbecile whose grumbling is a result of their own unfathomable actions, carelessness, ignorance or lack of common sense, maintaining a suitable amount of propriety in response can be achieved but, whether it’s a frown, a suppressed (sometimes unsuppressed!) laugh, open-mouthed astonishment, or a scrunched-up face of utter dumbfoundedness, trying to keep a poker face is oft-times impossible.

Welcome to our world :)
