Farm News; Signs of Spring! There are signs of spring appearing all over the farm and the biggest and most exciting sign is lambs! Today Lily, one of our Herdwick ewes lambed our first lambs of the year and had two lovely little lambs. These are her first lambs, she lambed outside like all of our ewes and then is having a few days inside with them as they get strong and we can monitor them for any problems.

Other signs of spring are:

Sowing seeds, this week we sowed grass and wildflower seeds in our meadow field

Wild plum blossom, wild plums are one of the first fruit trees to flower

Forced rhubarb, rhubarb has come back to life after a dormant winter and putting it under a cover encourages it to grow tall, pale and sweet

Spring bulbs

And the polytunnel doors are wide open during a sunny day and we are working without coats outside!

Farm News: we have a new animal on the farm; meet Apollo a Hebridean Castlemilk crossbreed whether sheep who has come from our good friends at Click Em Wood sheep. He is here to keep Dante, our ram, company while he is separated from the ewes while they lamb and then rear their lambs. Fortunately Dante seems to like Apollo (not guaranteed, he wasn't keen on his sons from last year!) which in Dante's terms means not chasing him round the field trying to butt him over the fences! All the other sheep have introduced themselves through the fences and, remarkably, he seems quite chilled and they seem to have accepted him as well. Look out for him when you visit!
