As 2023 celebrates the ‘Year of the Coast’ which is a national campaign to promote the coast and events around the coast throughout 2023, the Hornsea Carnival committee have stepped up to the challenge and are doing their bit to put the picturesque town of Hornsea well and truly on the map with yet another fun filled event.
So are you ready for a weekend filled with excitement, live music and family fun? Then this coming weekend’s Soapbox Derby event and it's going to be absolutely amazing!
As with all Hornsea Carnival Events is all about community engagement and bringing people together for a fun-filled experience. Our events are a great way to meet new people and spend time with your loved ones.
The Soapbox Derby is a thrilling race where kids and adults alike get to show off their creative and innovative designs.
APRIL 1st ( yes its no joke ) sees Hornsea Carnival’s first soapbox derby event bring a new family event to the area, and in the true spirit of the Carnival its FREE !! Yes you heard right it is FREE !!.
Teams will be completing pre registration on the evening of Friday, March 31 from 4pm. This build up will include live music, hot food and rides ( all been well ) while the Carnival team sorts all the pre-registration including getting waivers signed and assigning each team race slots and a team number.
Cinema Street carpark will be closed from 8am on Friday, March 31 to allow for the setup of the marquee and traders ahead of the registration evening. Live music on the registration evening will include a student band from Hornsea School and Language College, the Herring Gulls covering some of the sets.
Saturday, April 1 is race day. This has been organised with the Hornsea Collective to coincide with their shopping event at Hornsea Town Hall full of independent small businesses. The 150m race takes place from Westbourne Road across Cliff Road and into Hall Garth Park with road closures in place from 6am to allow for the event. The track is hoped to be set up for 8am and although it doesn’t include any jumps. Teams should arrive with their carts for scrutineering at 8am 9 Teams check your emails ) before drivers are walked through the track at 9.30am ahead of the first race at 10am. The last race is expected to be around 2.30pm – 3pm.
Scoring is based on the below with a maximum points score of 100:
1. Entry - Style / Creativity out of 25
2. Pre-Start Performance points out of 25
3. Distance covered 20
4. Time of Run 20
5. Comedy points 10
Staging will be at the rear half of Westbourne Road and Cliff Road will be used for the Hot Rods, food and spectators. Spectators will also be able to view from in the park. The awards presentations will then take place from 5.30pm with the first band on at 6.30pm.
The Saturday evening bands will include Midnight Special and Atlantic 45.
Volunteers will be welcomed by the Carnival Committee to help at the event including with cleaning the track down at 4pm on race day before the road is reopened.
Volunteers will help enable events like this to take place in the town as without them it is not doable. There will also be lots of straw bales available following the event – donations for these are welcome.
