Horner Wood | Looking down the East Water valley
From the air, the East Water carves its way down through the green canopy of Horner Wood, the tree-filled valley winding into the distance between steep wooded slopes. This is one of the wildest, least-disturbed corners of Exmoor, seen from a vantage point few ever get.
The East Water is one of the streams that feeds the Horner Water, tumbling down from the high moor through a tunnel of ancient oaks. Down on the valley floor, packhorse bridges and stepping stones cross the clear water, and the woods are alive with pied flycatchers, wood warblers and the dappled movement of red deer. It's a place that rewards slowing right down — following the stream, listening to the birdsong, and letting the green close in around you.
Riverside woodland walk or breezy moorland ridge — what's your idea of the perfect day out?
