It’s World Topiary Day. So here are a few pictures of some of ours

One of our lovely guests has written this poem.

THE HOUSE ON THE HILL

At the house on the hill where forget-me-knots spread
a dormouse darts from beneath a hedge
It nibbles on seed discarded by birds
One eye on the sky, forever alert

A crow soars from the trees at the end of the drive
Away the mouse scampers to the hedge where it hides
The crow, it circles and lets out a caw
then returns to the tree to wait like before

Chaffinch and blue tit flit in and out
And robin stands guard ‘til he’s in with a shout
Topiary soldiers stand tall, clipped, and neat
a playground for sparrows to play hide and seek

Off in the distance on stone-seamed hills
Herdwick amble on daisy-spotted fields
Dandelion clocks from hedgerows drift
on air that is warm, and cowslip picked

At the bottom of the garden at the house on the hill
A magnolia blooms for 200 years still
A bench stands beneath in a canopy of shade
Where the weary can rest at the end of the day

So, if you should venture from far away
A warm welcome awaits if you’d like to stay
Where life is slow, but never still
There’s a place for all at the house on the hill

We are seeing a worrying current trend of increasing cancellations by people who have booked with us later in the summer, in favour of foreign holidays.

Please consider us small U.K. based tourism and hospitality businesses who have had to endure one of the roughest rides in any sector during this pandemic, and indeed continue to do so going forward due to ongoing restrictions on our industry, in order to keep our guests safe.

The or “spread bookers” who hedge their bets by booking us alongside another foreign option (just in case), and then dumping us for that ‘better option’ abroad will sink many businesses in our industry. Collectively many tourism businesses have been proactive in offering flexible cancellation conditions throughout to help people book with confidence. But it’s beginning to backfire.

Please, please, please DON’T DOUBLE BOOK your summer holidays. We need as a nation to look after our economy and rebuild from within. Thank you.
