I drive a recovery vehicle in the applecross area and would like to offer some advice to drivers hopefully without anyone getting upset.

The most common recovery is punctures and one of the main causes of this is drivers who think they can squeeze past each other if they are between passing places. Do not do this. Stop in a straight line and reverse back to the next space. If you are not a confident reverse driver then wait a few seconds to see if the other driver will reverse. Its a little more time consuming but its better than a puncture. Hire car / van drivers please ignore this advice. You will do whatever you like because the vehicle is not yours.

Bealach to Applecross. There are signs at the base of the East side junction showing a campervan and also caravan with a huge red line through them. Now this is not because the roads department think you can't drive and its not because your vans are too heavy. Its because they are too wide and the Bealach has over a dozen passing places that are not wide enough for two vans or even a van and car to pass each other. When wide vehicles meet on these spots the resulting jam can close the entire mountain as traffic very quickly builds behind you.
Now if you can reverse your camper like Lewis Hamilton you can probably navigate the bealach without any fuss but this is not usually the case. Hire van drivers ( hands up ) are the worst by miles as lack of experience gets them into all sorts of problems.
I know the Bealach is on the N.C and i know everyone ignores the signs so they can wear that coveted T shirt down the pub so my advice is travel the mountain early or late to avoid problems and DO NOT tailgate each other. Leave two passing places between you and the next vehicle.

Second biggest recovery. Clutches. Do you own your own van ? do you want to avoid an expensive recovery and a 1500 quid clutch replacement at the end of your already expensive holiday. See my Bealach advice above. Hire van drivers ....... crack on ...... its not your clutch.

Lastly night drivers. You run the highest risk of damage from deer or potholes. The N.C generates a huge amount of wealth for the highlands yet the return investment in the road itself is a disgrace. So some sections of the road are in a shocking state. Always try to avoid driving these sections at night . In the lights of oncoming traffic you will see nothing until you hear the bang under the wheel and at night you may have a long wait for assistance.

Now you may think I'm trying to teach my granny how to sook eggs here and everyone is already following these simple ideas. If that were so I wouldn't be so busy a month in call outs would I ? Take care out there folks and apply the old common sense on those roads.
