Knowing how much we pack in our car when we go away on holiday with just two adults and a small dog, I do try to have a few extras at Dolphin View Cottage so guests don't need to pack the kitchen sink. Now I know nothing about golf whatsoever but as we are surrounded by golf courses, some posh, others more casual, I did get a set of golf clubs, balls and a carrying bag that is left at the cottage for guests to use if they so wish - obviously not top notch - but it's there if you fancy a cheeky day out. https://www.dolphinview.co/golf

We have been fortunate this summer in that we have avoided the heatwaves and drought affecting some parts of the UK. Mike, Hamish and I had a lovely walk along the Fairy Glen in Rosemarkie a couple of days ago, it’s true I have seen more water at the waterfalls but the path wasn’t muddy which is a bonus! Fairy Glen is on the Black Isle (a peninsula not an island) it makes a nice day trip from Dolphin View Cottage especially if you incorporate Fortrose, Chanonry Point and Cromarty in your trip. www.dolphinview.co

Thank you Julie for a fabulous, informative review with very useful tips, Platform 1864 is a new one to me but looking at the menu (with Stickly Toffee Pudding, I think we will soon be visiting).

Beautiful little bungalow, spotlessly clean. Very comfortable. Good communications regarding availability and keys etc. Lynn responds very quickly to any email/query. Has all those little things many self catering places miss which reduces the amount of things you need to take with you. Fan/flask/condiments/washing tablets - it's all there.
Tips for other travellers
The Star Inn, open at weekends is a great restaurant. The Waterfront in Inverness is a particular favourite. Further afield there is Platform 1864 in Tain and The Shandwick Inn at Kildary. A trip on the Dolphin Spirit boat is a great day out. Dalmore Farm at Alness has lovely souvenirs, and childrens petting farm and a great larder which stocks lovely shortbread direct from Orkney.

Between Dingwall and Strathpeffer you will find the Cat's Back, it is a gently undulating elevated ridge walk leading to an Iron Age vitrified defensive hill fort at Knockfarrel. It isn't high but it does offer wide panoramic views of Loch Ussie, Ben Wyvis, Castle Leod, Blackmail Wood and Strathpeffer. You can start the walk either in Strathpeffer, a lovely Victorian Spa village or the large car park at the cemetery between Dingwall and Strathpeffer (signed from the free car park). Fort George is just a gentle stroll along the shore path from Dolphin View Cottage and well worth a visit. Most years they hold a 'Celebration of the Centuries' event. It is always a spectacular weekend with lots to see and do. It is on this weekend and well worth a visit if you're in the area. www.dolphinview.co

Next time you are going to Fortrose/Chanonry Point to look for dolphins it's well worth stopping in Fortrose itself for a wander around, the High Street has some lovely independent shops selling jewellery, crafts and candles, there's also a butchers two bakers, a co-op and a pharmacy so most bases are covered. Explore behind the High Street and you will find lovely old sandstone buildings, churches and the 13th Century Fortrose Cathedral, now just a shell - Should Fortrose be a city if it has a cathedral? There's free parking in the village, toilets and a couple of excellent eateries. www.dolphinview.co , ,

Village amenities including shops, a pub and a cafe are all within walking distance.
