On this day 281 years ago (23 July 1745) Charles Edward Stuart, better known as Bonnie Prince Charlie, stepped ashore on Eriskay in the Outer Hebrides.

He had arrived with only a handful of companions, limited supplies, and no army behind him - yet this moment marked the beginning of the Jacobite Rising of 1745. From this remote island landing, Charlie would go on to rally support across the Highlands, raise the Jacobite standard at Glenfinnan, and lead a campaign that would become one of the most famous chapters in Scottish history.

What began as a daring gamble on a Hebridean shore would end less than a year later on the battlefield of Culloden, leaving a legacy that still echoes through Scotland today.
