Refreshing the Garden Wall

First impressions matter. Firm believer in that, so we like to make sure Struthan Cottage always looks as best as it can be. That includes the outbuildings and walls.

With such a nice day, we’ve been powerwashing down the garden wall and after it dried, a coat of gleaming brilliant white paint. Then just as we thought job well done, just remembered the inside face of the wall needed done too! An enjoyable task in the sunshine, working in shorts and T shirt in March! All freshened up for 2026 guests.

Springtime Maintenance

We’re here in Tiree this week opening up for a busy season ahead and attending to some Springtime maintenance.

It’s been a beautiful day today. Light winds, sunny skies and temperatures warmer than lately, so it’s been the perfect opportunity to be working outside on some whitewashing. Our little patio area had taken a beating over the Winter, so its now been freeshened up with whitewash, some additional planting, a BIG sweep up and of course putting the patio furntiure out for warmer times.

Here’s our before and after pictures, which I’m sure you’ll agree now looks much better. We’re not quite finished outside yet but things are certainly looking nicer for guests.

Tiree Sailor in Calcutta Shipwreck, 1892

We’ve been researching some Tiree history this week. In September 1892, the sad news arrived in Balemartin to Charles Campbell, that tragically, his son Charles had died at sea.

He had been in a shipwreck half way around the world where he had drowned. He was a promising, bright young man who had only left Tiree for sea in a promising sailing career two months earlier.

The ship “Anglia” was wrecked near Calcutta in the Hooghly River in August 1892, not arriving as a successful voyage. The vessel was a fine steamer of over 3,000 tons belonging to the Anchor Line. The passing of Charles Campbell deeply shocked the island and he is remembered here.

Boatmen Tender for Postal Service, 1872

We’ve been doing some research into Tiree’s history. Duirng Summer 1872, the the contract terminated for postal services to some of the islands, a vacancy opened up presenting opportunity to Tiree’s best boatmen.

Her Majesty’s Mail Service between Tobermory, Coll and Tiree having been abruptly suspended that Summer, saw Tiree’s best boatmen scramble for the job. According to the Oban Times and Aryllshire Advertiser, one man in Tiree was SO determined for the job, that he practically got all the islanders to sign his testimonial which he then sent on to the Post Office in Edinburgh.

The note commented was peppered with commentary in his favour suggesting why he was the best person for the job. The man had a fast sailing smack which was mentioned often.

However, the Post Office made their choice with an earlier application favouring a smaller vessel with an interior ready made crew who would attend to the mail and parcels, (as well as their own fishing duties) for the small price of just a few shillings. The vessel going to those locations saw it as no further work to simply pick up the mailbags whilst there.

This was a time when some of the other islands were starting to install Telegraphs and setting up regular mail collections, so there was great feeling in Tiree on that recommendation paper that Tiree should not be left “so far at sea!”

Isle of Tiree, 1872

We’ve been researching some Tiree history. This short report from 1872 gives a stark glimpse into everyday life on Island of Tiree—and it’s striking how much is packed into just a few lines.

It said, “The weather here since the beginning of autumn has been very unfavourable for farming operations. Cutting is well forward, but it is hard to say when crops can be secured if the present weather continues. The potato crop is estimated to yield little over a quarter of last year’s crop, which, with the high price of coals, will be greatly against the poorer classes. Unprecedented high prices are the rule for all kinds of stock, more especially for young horses, which are selling of late at exorbitant prices.”

Relentless autumn weather was already threatening harvests, with farmers unsure whether crops could even be secured. Most alarming of all was the collapse of the potato crop, expected to produce little more than a quarter of the previous year’s yield. For an island community where potatoes were a staple, this would have been deeply worrying.

The report which appeared in the Oban Times also highlighted the pressure on the poorest families. High coal prices—critical for heating and cooking—combined with food shortages meant winter would be harsh. Meanwhile, livestock prices soared, especially young horses, putting them out of reach for many and reshaping rural economies.

What makes this piece so powerful is how familiar it feels. Weather extremes, food insecurity, fuel costs, rising prices—these were real fears in 1872, just as they are today.

Balemartine Bank, 1950

We’ve been looking at some Tiree history. From 76 years ago. A sub office of the National Bank of Scotland was opened on 14th December 1950 at ‘Sunbeam Cottage’, Balemartine, Isle of Tiree. In charge was manager Mr. J.T.D. Wilson, manager at Scarinish.

Probably one for the islanders, but whatever happened to this bank? Attendance was given weekly on Thursdays from 1.30pm to 3.00pm.

Sad fire temporarily closes church

We were saddened to see photos of the recent fire to the Baptist church in Tiree.

The building was more or less destroyed by fire just after Christmas, forcing the accommodation to be relocated temporarily elsewhere. The fire made National headlines and its shocking effects rippled right through the community.

Thankfully nobody was injured and hopefully insurance and rebuilding is on the agenda.
