So May has now passed and June arrived. The bluebells around the Castle have given way to blossom of hawthorn (scroll left) and the summer will soon be with us.
Did you know that Hawthorns (Latin name Crataegus monogyna) are hermaphrodite, meaning both male & female reproductive parts are within each flower. They are scented and mostly white but occasionally flushed with pink.
Once they have been pollinated by insects, they develop into deep-red fruits known as 'haws'. Hence the name. 🌳
Thank you to Ian and Isobel Thomson for the beautiful photographs.

Spring returns to Ferniehirst Castle. The daffodils glow bright yellow and the sky is azure blue. Such a gloriously peaceful location here in the Scottish Borders. So thankful.💛💙

At Ferniehirst Castle it's a heavenly time of year; crisp walks through the woodlands and landscape, with a log fire blazing in the hearth to return to. The glistening tree in the foreground of this picture is a Persian ironwood, Parrotia persica.

The Great Hall or The Long Room comprises both a drawing room and dining room. It enjoys generous morning light through the long windows and in the autumn evenings the flames from the log fire offer a glowing warmth.
It's the perfect space for a special occasion or film location but is so cleverly designed that it also has the informality needed to provide the Kerr family and their guests with the cosy sitting room they need and enjoy when they are in residence.
