I'm writing you this post from a 16th century castle. The type of castle you might expect to see in Game of Thrones, or Lord of The Rings, Highlander, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III or the 2001 comedy Black Knight featuring Martin Lawrence. Okay, basically any castle that you've ever seen anywhere. You know what castles are, i don't need to explain them to you.

Your mind's eye, though, can only conjure up so much, and so I have helpfully included an image of the castle here.

Of course, sight is only one sense you'll engage with on the trail; stroke those lichen-decked walls, given bloom by a fresh northern breeze. Hear the waves crash thunderously against the mighty edges of Northern Scotland. Sense the earth with every footstep, every step forward a further connection to the land, every time you plant your foot, become closer to OHHNO THAT WAS A MUCH DEEPER PUDDLE THAN YOU THOUGHT THATS GONE IN THE BOOTS WET SOCKS

The point remains: the John o' Groat Trail needs to be not only seen to be believed, but experienced. The occasional wet sock 'n' all.
