It's good to see visitors enjoying the Abbey and grounds again.

Kelso Abbey is the sort of ruin that makes you wonder just how enormous the complete building must once have been.

Founded in 1128, it became one of the richest and most important abbeys in medieval Scotland. Its position close to the English border also meant it took an absolute battering over the centuries, culminating in a devastating attack in 1545 which left only fragments of the great church standing.

There’s royal history here too - James III was crowned at Kelso Abbey in 1460, following the death of his father at nearby Roxburgh. And after five years closed for conservation work, the abbey finally reopened to visitors in July. Nearly 900 years old and still demanding your attention.
