Robin, Susan Girdwood and their family would like to extend a warm welcome to all guests and visitors to The Old Priory Bed and Breakfast, our family home. and to our beautiful town of Kelso, the cobbled town, in the heart of the Scottish Borders. The Borders is a beautiful if largely undi

scovered part or Scotland, and in many ways we like to keep it a little bit secret, but it is not as VisitScotland describe “The shortbreak destination of Scotland” when you come here there is a wealth of history to keep you in the area for many days. Most people, who discover the Borders come back year after year. We offer traditional bed and breakfast hospitality, a family atmosphere, with a friendly, relaxed feel in a very atmospheric and comfortable enviroment. Our rooms are considered to be what hotels call superior and we aim to provide a friendly, relaxed atmosphere. We are centrally situated, within a short walk from all of the towns restaurants, for wedding guests Ednam House is only 100 yards, a quick totter on high heels! We do suggest that wedding guests book two days as early arrival cannot be guaranteed.During the summer months we ask that a minimum of two nights is booked at weekends. Hopefully your first visit to us will not be your last! We have a very flexible layout and can accommodate most parties. We have twin beds, doubles and the Family Suite. We find that this is particularly useful for fishing, walking and golfing parties. Our Sitting Room provides a huge space in which to have a glass of wine while you plan your next outing. The Sitting Room overlooks the garden and the church. The garden is enclosed and we encourage guests to use it. Our Bed and Breakfast’s walled garden provides off road parking and a haven in the town for our guests. Kelso is a vibrant town with events such as the Jim Clark Rally, Border Union Show, Civic Week, Regular Horse Race Meetings, British Motorcycle Federation Show and many more events
throughout the year.

Kelso Abbey.
In about 1113, David I invited Benedictine monks from Tiron Abbey in northern France to establish a house at Selkirk. By 1128 the monks had relocated to Kelso, close to David’s new castle at Roxburgh across the River Tweed.
Those founding Tironensians have the distinction of being the first of the reformed Benedictine orders to settle anywhere in the British Isles.
The abbey church is one of the most spectacular examples of Romanesque architecture in Scotland.
By the 1500s it had suffered severely from repeated English invasions. A final attack in 1545 saw the buildings ‘all put to royen, howsses and towres and styples’. Everything was destroyed except for the fragment of the abbey church that remains.

Due to access restrictions in place as a precautionary measure while high level masonry inspections are carried out, there is currently no visitor access to this site.
BUT you can still take great photos from directly outside and from the beautiful gardens at Kelso War Memorial next to the Abbey.
