Meet The Newt, our resident guide to all things drinks at Wild Boar Estate.

Back in Admiral Lord Nelson's day, new Royal Navy recruits were nicknamed "newts". Young lads, thrown straight into life at sea, often found themselves a little worse for wear after their first taste of rum rations. That's where the old phrase "drunk as a newt" comes from.

We've borrowed the name for something far more civilised. Every Friday from 4 to 5pm, join Head Brewer Lukasz Zalewski for a guided beer tasting session at Wild Boar Estate. Expect a run through our own brews, the stories behind them, and plenty of tips on what to try next.

No naval discipline required, just a curiosity for good beer.

Who's the best shot in your group?

Wild Boar Estate has its own purpose-built clay shooting range, hidden away in the Gilpin valley. Instructors from Coates Activities run every session, so it doesn't matter if your group has never picked up a gun before, everyone gets proper guidance from the first clay.

Book for five or more and the price drops. Add archery or axe throwing at a discount to turn it into a full day, or bring falconry into the mix through Lake District Falconry.

Tag the group you'd bring along.

The school holidays are on their way out, but the Kids Afternoon Tea at Wild Boar Estate isn't.

It's the children's take on our Alternative Afternoon Tea, served at the Grill & Smokehouse, £18 per child. Mini Longhorn hot dog, mini cod and chips, cheesy nachos, toffee popcorn, a double chocolate cookie and a hot chocolate or milkshake to finish. Then straight out into 72 acres of woodland to burn it all off.

Term time or not, it's staying on the menu, so this is just as much a weekend or half term plan as it is a last-week-of-summer one.

It's International Beer Day. The Brewhouse at Wild Boar Estate is marking it with a new weekly tasting: Mad Pig, Blonde Boar, Hog's 54 IPA and Crookweiser, every Friday from 4pm to 5pm, guided by our Head Brewer, Łukasz.
