This looks like a great local initiative 💚 5 Miles With Smiles is a Cumbria-based community challenge inviting people to plan a short, creative journey of up to five miles, make people smile along the way, and share a video of the experience to win prizes. Winner to be announced at Kendal Mountain Festival. Pick any 5 mile or less route and walk, bike, paddle, ride or hop! We have not yet completed the 5.5 mile Crooklands Gunpowder Trail, which follows the historic route of the 19th-century Gatebeck horse-drawn tramway, connecting the former Gatebeck Gunpowder Works to Wakefield's Wharf at Crooklands. So that is now on our list of things to do during the summer holidays! Let us know if you are joining in with the challenge or have some creative suggestions!
We’re delighted to be supporting the launch of "5 Miles With Smiles" a new community initiative encouraging people across Cumbria to plan a creative, active and enjoyable short journey.
Walk it, cycle it, wheel it, paddle it or scoot it. However you choose to travel, the challenge is simple:
✨ Plan a journey of around five miles thinking about how you can bring a smile to people you meet along the way
✨ Get out there and make some happy memories - don't forget to capture it on your phone or camera 📸
✨ Create a short video sharing the best moments from your journey, share it on Facebook or Instagram tagging to be in with a chance of winning some fantastic prizes.
Entries will be celebrated at the challenge wrap-up during Kendal Mountain Festival in November 2026, where stories and highlights from some of Cumbria’s most inventive travellers will be shared.
