Discover tales of murder and intrigue; the lakes and fells are surrounded by legend, folklore and mystery. Local guide and seasoned actor Jane Dickens, widely known as
“The Lady”, delivers well-told stories that will make your spine tingle. Follow her if you dare!

Meet at Moot Hall, Keswick, available every evening at 7.30 pm. (5.30 Halloween). The walk lasts approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes. All tickets must be purchased in advance at www.lakelandhauntings.co.uk. The tour is suitable for children 10 years or older, and dogs are more than welcome.

On National Poetry Day, we’re looking back at the timeless literary heritage surrounding the Royal Oak.

The Lake District has inspired countless iconic verses over the centuries, and the Borrowdale Valley was a favourite retreat for Wordsworth, Coleridge, and Southey. In fact, William Wordsworth himself once laid his head right here at the Royal Oak!

What’s On In Whinlatter This October 🍁🍂

Whinlatter Forest is hosting a great mix of autumn outdoor activities, family events, and stargazing sessions:

Nature’s Nightlife Family Walk: Wednesday, October 28 (5:00 PM - 7:00 PM). A guided evening walk listening for owls and exploring nocturnal forest life, finishing around a campfire with hot chocolate and marshmallows (suitable for ages 5+).

Dark Skies Walk: Thursday, October 29 (from 6:00 PM). Part of the Cumbria Dark Skies Festival, this 3-to-4-mile guided night walk explores the forest trails after dark with stargazing opportunities.

Full Moon Women’s Circle - Hunter’s Moon: Monday, October 26(7:00 PM - 10:00 PM)-An outdoor evening gathering centred around the full moon (meets at Noble Knott car park).

Forest Wild Sauna: Sunday, October 18 (hourly sessions from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM). An outdoor sauna experience set right in the forest.

Woodland Reset: Sunday, October 18(10:00 AM - 2:00 PM). A guided immersion session focused on slowing down and reconnecting with nature.

Trade the everyday routine for an autumn half-term reset in Borrowdale.

Think crunchy leaf walks along the river, sweeping mountain views, and coming home to a warm, welcoming inn after a day in the fresh air.

Whether you’re bringing the whole family for an active outdoor break or escaping for a quiet mid-term breather, the Royal Oak is your cosy home from home in the Lake District this October.

Don’t miss a visit to Whinlatter Forest, England’s only true mountain forest, located near the village of Braithwaite just outside Keswick. There is a wonderful adventure playground, where children can explore the natural environment. It includes an Archimedes screw, secret doors in trees and a series of pulleys to move millions of little pebbles.

Whinlatter is home to several graded walks, running trails and cycle tracks. You can take your own bike or hire one there from Cyclewise. For those over ten, there’s treetop adventure with Go Ape, a high-level journey along bridges, and zip slides 40 feet high in the air.
