Today mark's our first night of opening for the season and it's always a time when we think of the generations who have gone before us, who ran the campsite on the farm years ago.
We know the farm has been welcoming campers to stay since at least 1948 because Mr Berryman senior has that very recollection, but what we don't know is how early before that campers came to stay, and sadly we will never know either. So today marks at least 78 years of camping at the farm! That's quite some time.
And we are pleased to say that not alot has actually changed! We have updated the "bucket and chuck it" loo which everyone was asked to bring years ago! We now have the very eco long drops, and we also have a little added luxury of hot showers. When we were repeatedly asked to keep camper's beer cold in our own fridge, we decided it was time to add some of those too along with freezers for ice packs. And sadly our lives now revolve around technology, and even when we try to escape it camping, unfortunately we still require a phone, so the USB phone charging points were fitted a couple of years ago for your convenience.
But all this has been created in a rustic manner which gives the site character, charm and a chilled out ambience.
Many guests return year on year, and we still have several families who came to stay with us as children in the 70's, returning with their own families today.
We remain a working farm and our own children are fifth generation.
South Milton Sands remains unspoilt, and still the fields roll down to the beach as they would have done back in 1948.
With turbulent times abroad and alot of uncertainty, first indications are showing that South Devon is going to be in for a busy summer.
If you'd like to come and stay in our little oasis of peace, near the beach, just go to www.southdevoncampingsite.co.uk
We look forward to welcoming you.
