Event Review: Hull Minster Beer Festival 2026

Members of Phoenix Lodge were among the many who enjoyed the 2026 Hull Minster Beer Festival, and the event more than lived up to its reputation as one of the region’s standout celebrations of local beer and community.

This year’s festival continued its strong commitment to showcasing the best of the region’s brewing talent. Breweries such as Atom, Aitchesons, Docks Beers, Jazz Brew Co, Wold Top, Brass Castle, and Great Newsome each ran their own bars, giving visitors, including Phoenix Lodge members, the chance to chat directly with the people behind the beer.

The range was excellent: refreshing session ales, bold stouts, inventive specials, and a solid cider offering. The festival’s trademark promise held true once again: no session ran out of beer, keeping the atmosphere upbeat from start to finish.

Hull Minster remains one of the most atmospheric festival venues in the country. The combination of historic architecture, warm lighting, and the hum of conversation created a setting that felt both grand and welcoming.

We noted the friendly, community‑driven feel, dogs wandering happily, locals catching up over pints, and live music adding just the right amount of energy without overwhelming the space.

For the Phoenix Lodge members who attended, the 2026 Hull Minster Beer Festival was a thoroughly enjoyable outing, a perfect blend of local craftsmanship, community spirit, and a stunning venue.

The festival continues to set a high bar for what a local beer event can be: warm, well‑organised, and proudly rooted in the region’s brewing culture.

Freemasonry is guided by four core principles, integrity, friendship, respect, and charity, which are intended to help its members develop strong character and make a positive contribution to society. These principles were clearly embodied throughout the regular meeting of Phoenix Lodge No. 9963, held on Saturday 11th April 2026, both in the dignity of the ceremonial work and in the warmth of the fellowship that characterised the day.

It was a special occasion as under the old format the Lodge farmed out its second degrees, so in its 8-year existence, this was the first passing ceremony the Lodge has performed.

The Lodge was opened promptly in due form and with Solemn Prayer. The Worshipful Master, W. Bro Paul Hillary PPSGW, warmly welcomed members and visitors alike setting a dignified and reflective tone for the meeting.

The Worshipful Master then proceeded to invest those officers for the ensuing year who had been absent from the previous regular meeting.

The principal business of the meeting was the Passing of Bro. Paris Smith. Bro. Smith satisfactorily answered the necessary questions put to him by the Worshipful Master, after which all brethren below the rank of Fellowcraft were requested to retire.

Bro. Smith was Obligated by the Worshipful Master, after which the Secrets of the Degree were communicated by W. Bro Andy Hinchcliff and the ceremony continued seamlessly with the Southeast Corner delivered by W. Bro James Steele PPSGD, the Working Tools explained by W. Bro Alex McCallum PPJGD and the Charge delivered by W. Bro Martin Lauer. Each contribution was delivered with clarity and sincerity with Bro Craig Eastburn supporting Bro. Paris throughout the meeting in his role as Senior Deacon. The Worshipful Master thanked all those present who had taken part in the ceremony and all remaining business was conducted efficiently and harmoniously before the Lodge was closed in due form.

Following the successful conclusion of the Lodge proceedings, brethren, partners, friends, and family adjourned to a most convivial White Table Festive Board. The occasion was characterised by warm fellowship and good cheer, further enhanced by the presence of Jazz Brew Co, a newly established nanobrewery from Willerby, who generously showcased a selection of their real ales. Tasting samples were available throughout the afternoon, complemented by a well‑received buffet that ensured there was something for all tastes. The Worshipful Master announced that the raffle had raised £100 which would be donated to the charity Zarach, helping children living in bed poverty. He also noted in parish notes our next meeting in July is lining up to be a special one, more details coming soon!!

The relaxed and inclusive atmosphere provided an excellent conclusion to the day’s Masonic labours, reinforcing the strong sense of community and friendship that is a hallmark of Phoenix Lodge.
