This is one of my favourite walks - although I like to walk one way from Goathland to Grosmont & get the train back 🤣. If any guests fancy it I can explain my route.
Walk along riverside trails, visit waterfalls, explore famous TV and film locations, and discover railway history in the North York Moors. 🥾
Looking for a scenic walk with a little bit of everything? The Goathland to Grosmont Rail Trail is a beautiful route through the North York Moors National Park, linking two charming villages with woodland paths, river views and glimpses of the historic railway.
The 7.7-mile point-to-point trail follows part of an old railway line between Goathland and Grosmont, passing through peaceful deciduous woodland and alongside the West Beck and Murk Esk rivers.
There is also the option to take a short detour to Mallyan Spout, the tallest waterfall in the North York Moors, with a dramatic 70-foot drop.
Along the way, walkers may even spot steam trains on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, adding a lovely nostalgic touch to the journey.
Goathland Station is well known for its screen appearances, most famously as Hogsmeade Station in the first Harry Potter film and in ITV’s Heartbeat.
The route is rated moderate, with an elevation gain of 602 feet, and usually takes around 3 hours and 23 minutes to complete. It is generally well-signposted, dog-friendly in places, and both Goathland and Grosmont have cafes and pubs for a well-earned stop before or after your walk.
