We've just returned from a 5-week camping road trip around Europe - 8 countries, multiple locations in some beautiful places!
We absolutely loved it, but the one thing we didn't expect is how much it would make us appreciate some things we might take for granted at our own campsite. Things like:
1. Spacious pitch sizes
Our tent wasn't massive, and we had a small awning, but on a few occasions, we didn't have enough space on our pitch to put both up, making sitting out and outdoor cooking pretty difficult.
2. Choosing your own pitch
We were only allowed to choose our own pitch twice in 5 weeks. We all have different requirements and it's nice to be able to set up where you want.
3. Ground quality
Talk about rocky!! We had rock pegs, and a mallet, and still struggled to get the pegs in. No soft, rock free ground anywhere like at Low Greenside!
4. Individual shower rooms
We only stayed at one site which had individual shower rooms and not tiny cubicles with no space to hang your clothes or get dried properly. And boy did we pay through the nose for that 'luxury'.
5. Free charging lockers
Only a handful of places offered charging facilities and they were charged by the hour!
6. Meeting the owners
Apart from check-in, we never saw, met or spoke to anyone who worked on any of the campsites. No one to ask for tips on the local area or just to chat to whilst washing up. We meet and greet every camper who arrives and love chatting about your plans for your stay. We genuinely didn't realise it might not be like that elsewhere.
7. Free firepit on every pitch
Only 1 campsite in 5 weeks allowed campfires (just in general, not because of the dry summer they've had) and you had to rent it from them and pay a hefty amount for a small bag of sticks (I couldn't call them logs!)
8. A communal camping feel
Rows of tightly-packed pitches, with cars in between and no open space meant there wasn't really a communal camping atmosphere between campers like we're used to at Low Greenside. No one sat out just watching the stars, or children making friends playing out. It really made us appreciate the lovely campers and friendly vibe you bring to our site when staying with us.
