One of our favourite places to walk near Kirkcudbright is the MoD Range out towards Dundrennan. Access times can be checked on the gov.uk website and access is not allowed if the red flags are hoisted. The Range covers a large area of farmland is is home to many rare plants and wild flowers. I used the Merlin Bird ID app (free download) today and was able to identify the call of the Chiffchaff, Greater Whitethroat, Meadow Pipet, Skylark, Stonechat, Goldfinch and Linnet.

Wigtown, Scotland's National Book Town, is about a 30 mile drive along the coast from Kirkcudbright. It is home to Scotland's largest second-hand bookshop, with around 1 mile of shelving and 100,000 books in stock. Shaun Bythell, the owner, has written about his day to day encounters, you'll find copies of his books in our cottage.

We have had some work done in the kitchen recently and now have a large fridge/ freezer and a dishwasher for guests to use during their stay. Came across this circular walk today, The Talnotry Trail, on the A712 in the Galloway Forest Park. Only 1.5 miles but classed as strenuous with long, steep climbs rewarded by great views. Takes in Murray's Monument, Grey Mare's Tail waterfall and The Quorum by Matt Baker.
