Imagine sitting here, watching the horizon, not knowing if enemy ships were about to appear….

Once a place of defence, tension and uncertainty, the Balfour coastal batteries now stand silent, with only the sound of the waves and wind.

If these walls could talk, imagine the stories they’d tell.

⚓️ All hands on deck… or should I say, all hands on laundry!

We had the pleasure of welcoming the Royal Navy to our office on Wednesday.

Of course, we couldn’t let them leave without putting them to work… so we had them doing a spot of laundry!

They might be used to running a tight ship, but they were under the command of the SCHH regiment on Wednesday!

Great sports and a brilliant visit!

Looking forward to seeing you next year guys! 🫡

Today marks the 87th anniversary of the sinking of HMS Royal Oak in Scapa Flow, when 835 men and boys tragically lost their lives on 14 October 1939.

We’ve had the privilege of welcoming Royal Navy personnel to stay with us in Orkney as they carry out commemorative duties and attend today’s remembrance ceremony.

It’s a particularly poignant time here in Orkney, where the story of HMS Royal Oak remains such an important part of our history.

We remember all those who lost their lives and the families they left behind.

We will remember them. ⚓

⚓️ Experience local culture - attend some of the events held this October, learn about local history including the HMS Royal Oak.
🐚 Visit the beaches, walk the shores and find yourself a Groatie Buckie to take home to bring you luck 🍀
🏛️ Visit the historic sites such as St Magnus Cathedral, Earl’s Palace or The Italian Chapel.
☀️ Get outside, explore! You don’t need to set off far to find something wonderful here.
