Creating an Orkney garden Former B&B We closed Straigona B&B at the end of 2024, on to our next project - a large garden (around 1 acre + 2 acre field) in Rendall, Orkney.

Using the unsettled weather to continue organising and tidying the polycrub. Using a couple of Autopot systems (and a couple more still to do) and capillary matting to bring on seeds and seedlings. Still the vegetable beds to finish clearing and re-energising for the next crop... We've left it rather late but now working on getting the solar panel up and lights installed.

Making the most of the sunny spells today. Instead of being very enviromentally unfriendly with vast numbers of cable ties we have, hopefully, come up with an idea for winterproofing the fruit cage which will be easily put up and taken down. So this took longer with the prep to be done. And several interruptions due to heavy showers... but first side is up and the rest shouldn't take as long. Then time will tell whether it's been worth the effort!

More work on the windbreak to give the new trees some protection. Mike has spray painted the pallets so they all look the same. More fence posts knocked in, windbreak netting attached with batons... more than halfway along and now waiting for more fence posts to arrive. Then it rained so back to the polycrub...

Still chipping away at getting the polycrub tidied and organised but that's the pea raised bed sown. Just LOVE fresh pea...

The back bank.... Bellis, Bladder Campion and Rubdeckia grown from seed. The Fuchsia patch flowering nicely. Unfortunate...

The back bank.... Bellis, Bladder Campion and Rubdeckia grown from seed. The Fuchsia patch flowering nicely. Unfortunately the weeds are attempting a comeback so that will have to be top of my list on the next dry day although I did run the W**d Microwipe over some of them. Let's see how that works...

Still a surprising amount of colour about! Nerines just flowering, not much colour around the pond admittedly but the rockery makes up for that! The yellow Marguerites and orange Calendulas are a real splash of colour and, probably, amongst the easiest to grow from seed.

It's getting towards the time of year when I'll be driving to work in the dark but, for now, I have the beautiful skies ...
