Some local history

📅 On this day in 1973, whilst out walking his dog, James Marshall made a rather grisly discovery! Construction of a new car park was taking place at Jubilee Tower, on the outskirts of Lancaster. The workers had disturbed what originally was thought to be two dug out boats. Further inspection revealed the finds to be two halves of an ancient coffin - the remains of a burial from around 600 - 700 A.D. The soil conditions had meant only the deceased's hair and nails were left in the casket, wrapped in a large woollen shroud.⚰️

The finds were eventually gifted to Lancaster City Museums by Lady Sefton, who owned the land it was discovered on. Having gained the name 'The Quernmore Burial', the remains are now on display in the museum's local history gallery and happens to be one of our favourite pieces in their collection! ⚰️
