Explore the full Lancaster Canal Towpath Trail with our official DIY Challenge Route from Kendal to Lancaster.

A brilliant, multi-day stay-over challenge to experience the full stretch of the Lancaster Canal Towpath Trail at your own pace. Take 2 or 3 days and really make the most of this stunning stretch of canal towpath, known as the most northerly canal path in England.

Covering around a marathon distance, this route takes you through peaceful countryside, canal heritage, quiet towpaths, waterside views, local villages and plenty of welcoming places to stop along the way.

With transport links between Kendal and Lancaster with Stagecoach, Northern Rail or TransPennine Express, you can walk one way and hop on a bus or train back to where you began. Or you could take a few extra days and walk back along the route again to enjoy it backwards.

We’ve designed the route as a flexible multi-day challenge, perfect for walkers and runners who want to break the journey up, book a stay at one of the lovely local hotels or inns along the trail, and make a proper trip of it.

Whether you’re doing it for fitness, fresh air, fundraising, a personal milestone or simply the joy of exploring somewhere new, this is your challenge to complete your way.

Access Bowland Hub Spotlight: Sabden Community Tramper

As part of our Access Bowland Hub Spotlight series, we're showcasing the wonderful locations that help make the countryside more accessible for everyone. This week, we're visiting the Sabden Community Tramper Hub.

Run by a dedicated team of local volunteers, the Sabden Community Tramper Hub provides access to a Tramper all-terrain mobility vehicle, enabling more people to enjoy the beautiful landscapes around Sabden and Pendle, with a self guided trail to Churn Clough Reservoir. The hub is part of the wider Access Bowland network, and the Tramper vehicle is provided by the Charity

The Tramper offers greater freedom for people with limited mobility, wheelchair users, those recovering from illness or injury, and anyone who finds uneven terrain challenging. With support from the friendly volunteer team, visitors can enjoy the benefits of spending time outdoors while taking in the spectacular scenery of the area.
Access Bowland is all about breaking down barriers and creating opportunities for more people to connect with nature, discover new places and enjoy memorable experiences with friends and family.
