🐈‍⬛ Design, print and create an edition of 20 1-2 colour RISO printed (Anti)Christmas cards of your very own. Learn about the history of RISO, how the process works and learn how to design for RISO print using analogue collage and drawing methods.

Stereotypically, Christmas Cards are warm, friendly and wholesome. But did you know that during the Victorian era, you were just as likely to find a picture of a dead robin, duelling frogs or Santa punishing the naughty in great detail? When we look at some of the folkloric, cultural characters of the winter season, it's not all warm and fuzzy; it is bleak, stark and dangerous, a reminder to be thankful for what you have, and more importantly, to be good...

In this workshop, you will design, print, crop and fold an edition of 20 1-2 colour RISO printed A6 cards using ESA's RISO room. Learning how to design and make analogue colour separations and layers to create multi coloured RISO prints, you'll have access to various analogue collage and mark-making materials to work with, but if you also have something specific you want to collage with, feel free to bring it along too. Each participant will design and print with the help and support of North or Nowt during the session.

🪑 It was fantastic to get to see Wrapped in Cold Hard Comfort last week, the new sculpture by ESA studio holder Andi Walker at Yorkshire Sculpture Park.

A slate quilt draped over a chaise longue, it sits looking out over Lower Lake. The slate takes the place of the softness usually associated with textiles, bringing weight and solidity to the piece, while the stitching into its hard surface becomes a determined act in the face of difficulty.

🎨 Keighley’s new multi-million-pound creative hub is almost complete.

The top floor of the former Sunwin House department store has been completely transformed into Hanover Works—a cultural hub of national significance right in the heart of Keighley.

A year-long programme of work to completely refurbish the space was undertaken following a £2.6m grant from the hashtag administered by Bradford Council; £1.27m from the Community Ownership Fund; £906k through Keighley College and £250k from Bradford 2025’s Cultural Capital Fund.

The space has now been entirely re-configured to accommodate Keighley creatives as well as local artists, makers, and community groups. The extensive refurbishment included a street gallery frontage, flexible performance and workshop spaces, and 26 dedicated artists' studios.

It will also serve as a vital community and educational resource, with Keighley College utilising the space to deliver adult learning, digital training, and skills courses.

The team and studio holders at Keighley Creative are currently moving from their Cooke Lane home into this exciting new chapter. Hanover Works (a nod to the site's heritage as the former Hanover Mill) is set to supercharge the local creative economy and provide a brilliant space for artists, makers, and residents alike.

The lease for the building is held by East Street Arts a Leeds-based artist-led charity that has provided affordable workspace, resources and professional support for artists.

East Street Arts first opened up the empty Sunwin House as temporary studio space for local artists in 2016, and Keighley Creative grew from that community. In 2023, Bradford Council and Keighley Creative asked East Street Arts to support the capital project, drawing on its experience of developing Patrick Studios in Leeds and other permanent artist spaces.

James is a process-led artist whose practice explores nonlinearity through sound, image, diagrams and assemblage. During his residency in the Project Space he has had room to experiment, develop ideas and make new work, bringing together his ongoing investigations into science, philosophy, technology and art.

📸 Ayodeji Faturoti arrived in the UK from Nigeria less than a year ago, already an established photographer working across commercial, corporate and fashion work. Now based in Middlesbrough, he's Navigator North's 2026 studio bursary holder at Dundas House, one of our meanwhile spaces.

'The studio has brought structure to my work because I've been able to create with intention,' he says. 'Without a studio, there's no real drive towards creating.'

✂️ Cut, paste, destroy, print: a riso workshop with North or Nowt

Join printer, designer and print educator Mike Ainsworth (North or Nowt) for an evening in our Riso Room at Convention House, designing and printing a two to three colour riso print of your own.

You'll learn a bit of riso history, how the process works, and how to design for it, using analogue collage and drawing methods to build up your colour separations and layers. We'll have a range of collage and mark-making materials on hand, or bring your own if you've got something specific in mind. Everyone leaves with an edition of 10 prints to keep.

🎨 Tessa Houghton is a landscape painter based at Patrick Studios, where she's also run life drawing classes for around a decade. We talked to her about her practice working with gesture drawing, painting landscapes, and building a career.

'Life drawing, it's more about looking. It's as much about looking as it is drawing. It's teaching people how to see.'
