May evenings at Lane Head Farm.

Fire pit glowing, sheep in the fields, and the last of the daylight hanging over the hills.

We could get used to this. ❤️

We popped into Hartington Creamery recently and came away with exactly the sort of local ingredients we want to make part of the Lane Head Barns experience.

We’re currently working on our little Lane Head Barns larder menu, a selection of ready meals, breakfasts and extras guests will be able to pre-order before they arrive.

The idea is simple. Good food, made here, using lovely local ingredients, ready in the fridge when guests arrive. Some dishes will be ready to eat, others will be ready to pop straight in the oven.

First up, a salad with Hartington Creamery Devonshire Blue, figs, prosciutto, chopped pecans and rocket, dressed with local golden virgin rapeseed oil, raw apple cider vinegar and local honey.

Then a breakfast dish we’re rather excited about, our take on an Arnold Bennett omelette, made with un-dyed smoked haddock, wilted spinach, English mustard béchamel and Derby cheese from Hartington Creamery.

Nothing too fussy. Just good ingredients, cooked properly, ready for guests to enjoy without having to leave the barn.

This is the bit we’re enjoying most. Finding what’s good around us and making it part of a stay here.

Today’s veg patch plans were rained off, so we did the sensible thing and went exploring instead.

A very wet drive through the lanes near Wetton Mill, cream teas outside in the rain, a stop at Hartington Cheese where we somehow spent £27 on cheese, and a drink in The Devonshire Arms.

We also found a gorgeous little home store in Hartington called The Chicken Shed, where we picked up this beautiful hand-drawn “New Home” card, a homemade soy Apple Pie candle and a galvanised frame mirror for a bathroom perhaps?

They had some lovely cards and little bits that might be perfect for Brownie Heaven too, so that’s another dangerous idea planted in my head.

This is the bit I love about the move already. Not just the views, but the little food finds, local makers, rainy lanes, old pubs and the sort of places you only discover when the weather ruins Plan A.

Peak District life is going to suit us just fine.

More local finds incoming as we settle into Lane Head Barns.

Every stay at Morridge View includes a complimentary gourmet welcome hamper 🧺

Think artisan snacks, little indulgences and homemade brownies, soon to be baked onsite.

Because arriving in the Peak District should feel like the start of something special, not just check-in.

Last night’s drive into Leek, taken from the road at the top of our hill at about 8pm.

This was around half an hour before sunset, and the light just stopped us in our tracks.

One of the lovely things about living here is that views like this aren’t rare. You can be nipping out for milk, heading into town, or coming back from a walk, and suddenly the whole valley decides to show off.

The Peak District does have a habit of making ordinary evenings feel a bit special.

That view is just up the road from Lane Head Barns.

Picked this rhubarb straight from the garden and turned it into a crumble with an almond topping and proper homemade custard.

This is exactly the kind of food we’ll be offering at Lane Head Barns later this year… simple, seasonal, and made right here.

“From digging it out of the ground… to this 🥩”

Earlier this week I was wrestling horseradish out of the herb patch at Lane Head Barns
(snapped three forks in the process…)

Today it ended up here.

Local sirloin on the bone from Mollatt’s Farm Butchery in Ipstones
Proper Yorkshires
Crispy roasties in Beef Dripping & Butter
Wilted Greens with homegrown mint
Emperor Carrots (confit with Star Anise)
And fresh horseradish creme fraiche made from what we dug out ourselves

This is what Sunday should look like.

We’re working on something behind the scenes at the barns…
👉 Ready to go Sunday lunches like this
👉 Prepped, boxed, straight in the oven
👉 No stress, just a proper roast

Perfect if you’ve been out walking all day and just want to come back, put the oven on and eat well.

Not far off now.

“ever tried digging horseradish by hand? 🥵”

turns out the herb patch at lane head barns wasn’t a herb patch…
it was a full blown horseradish invasion.

dug this lot out today and snapped three forks in the process. not even joking.

but the upside…
this is proper stuff. fiery, fresh, nose-clearing horseradish straight from the ground.

which means one thing:

👉 homemade horseradish cream incoming
👉 roast beef weekends just levelled up
👉 and yes… it’s going into a few things it probably shouldn’t

there’s something quite satisfying about going from soil to plate in the same day

also… me gardening. didn’t think we’d see it.

✨ first family getaway… and this says everything ✨

We booked Lane Heads Barn (Morridge View) as a first family getaway and it did not disappoint!

What a wonderful property, so well equipped with everything you need and in such a peaceful location. The views over the sheep fields were beautiful, and our girls loved seeing the lambs morning and night 🐑

The barn was spotless and had everything we needed… hairdryers in every room, toiletries, towels, washing machine and dryer. The kitchen is fully equipped with everything you can think of.

The open plan living, dining and kitchen space is perfect for socialising and proper family time. And the bedrooms… unbelievably comfortable. Usually someone ends up with the “bad bed” on holiday, but not here. We all slept brilliantly and came home properly rested.

The location is perfect for exploring the Peak District and for long walks. It truly is a wonderful place.

Jason and Angela were so lovely and welcoming, going above and beyond throughout our stay. We arrived to a beautiful hamper, they dropped off extra logs late in the evening, and even brought a fire guard to keep the children safe. Nothing was too much trouble.

We even left two bags behind, and they arranged to post them back to us so we didn’t have to travel back.

Totally recommend Lane Head Barns for a peaceful, relaxing stay with genuinely caring hosts.

Thank you Angela and Jason, your place is amazing 🩷
