The weather has been very cold this recently, and ice has formed on the sea edge in parts of Shetland. Remember to wrap up warm while out walking in the winter air!

Throughout the year, you can see wrens in Shetland. The Shetland Wren (Troglodytes troglodytes zetlandicus) is distinct from the mainland equivalent, being slightly larger and a darker, more ruddy colour. They nest in the boulder beaches around the island, but you have to look closely to to see them!

Guided Tours during Up-Helly-Aa week 2019
Local guide James Tait will be providing tours for visitors who want to get out
and about from Lerwick during Up-Helly-Aa week. No tour on the big day itself
for obvious reasons! Tours will depend on the January weather and
itineraries may change due to the conditions on the day.
South Mainland & Scalloway
Mon 28
th & Thurs 31
st January.
Jarlshof archaeological site (including remains of Viking longhouses.)
View St. Ninian’s Isle & shell sand tombolo.
Scalloway museum and the ruined castle.
View the site of Shetland’s old Norse / Viking Parliament at Tingwall.
North & Central Mainland Wed 30th January.
View (but not visit) Scalloway, onto Tingwall Valley as we drive North.
Visit Eshaness and other parts of Northmavine.
Spectacular scenic drive with wide variety of landscapes & coastlines.
Each day we’ll see Shetland ponies and Shetland sheep and hear stories
from Shetland’s history & folklore.
Starting each day 9.15 am at the Tourist info Centre,
Commercial Street, Lerwick and returning 4.30pm (approx).
Cost £55 per person (based on a minimum group of 3)
Price does not include entrance fees & lunch.
Limited spaces - prior booking essential!
There will be a lunch stop on each tour. South – Sumburgh Hotel,
North – Frankies fish & Chips in Brae.
