What a great review from a recent guest in The Annex 😀

Who needs hotels? These type of properties far exceed what hotels offer.
+ As a solo traveller I can thoroughly recommend this property. Having had bad experiences with dingy Hotel rooms I have been converted to this type of property for a while. Beats any hotel for views, facilities and location. Owners present and helpful when needed.

I was also blessed with excellent weather so was able to dine on the patio. Easy access to neighbouring villages, the Wolds villages and the coastline. For those who want to cycle the roads around the property are quiet and flat.

The local pheasant, who struts around the garden daily, decided to stand outside the patio doors and peer at me through the blinds which amused me. Go ahead and book.

Happy Christmas! We have posted very few cards this year, so here's a virtual card - the Christmas Tree Cluster.

(For those interested in the geeky bits - this is a cluster of stars together with a nebula, some 2600 light years away. Image constructed from some 7 hours of data captured back in 2022 and in January this year, from the observatory by The Annex)

The skies above The Annex were actually clear last night!!

After ages of only seeing cloud, I was able to open the observatory last night for a good length of time and gather some data!
The California Nebula - NGC1499. A large but feint area of nebulosity in the region of Perseus. About 1000 light years away. The bright star at top right is Menkeb, the 12th brightest star in the constellation Perseus, this star illuminates the nebula.

This image made from 54x240sec exposures in 2020 and 44x240sec exposures last night.

Taken from above The Annex, this is IC410, a large area of nebulosity in our galaxy, some 12000 light years away from earth. It measures around 100 light years across.
The stars in the centre were formed about 4 million years ago (mere youngsters!) and their radiation pushes the gas away from them, hence the darker area in the middle and the streams of denser gas that can just be made out in the middle that have resisted the radiation.

For those interested, this image is made up of 107x240 second exposures, some taken in 2020 and some last night...

Come and stay in The Annex and enjoy a lesson in astronomy and astro photography from our observatory.

Probably my final image of the Comet as it flies over The Annex - taken 4 nights ago when the comet was in the south west in the Ta**us constellation. It was around 45 million miles away at this point. Top right of the image are some bright stars from the Open Cluster NGC 1647, some 1800 light years from earth.

Another 40 minutes of the Comet above The Annex - now drawing towards Polaris and visible through Binoculars.

Another image from the skies above The Annex. I can never resist photographing this region of the sky - the Horsehead and Flame Nebulae (and others) in the Orion Constellation. For a sense of scale, the "horsehead" (a shape formed from dust) measures a mere 4 lightyears tall (around 24 trillion miles!)

This image is a result of 8 hours worth of 240 second exposures taken between January this year and January 2021.
