🍂 You can cook 'alfresco' with family and friends here at Penbugle.
🍂🍂 You can also explore the area and enjoy some classic dishes of Cornwall ...
💚Cornish Pasty
Perhaps Cornwall’s most famous dish! This is a pastry pocket filled with tasty morsels such as diced beef, onion, potato and turnip. The edge of the ‘pocket’ must be crimped too. Tasty and satisfying!
💚Cornish Yarg
With around 60 varieties of cheese produced in the county, Cornish Yarg is perhaps the best known.
Cheese lovers have likened it to Caerphilly in terms to flavour, but the distinctive feature is the edible rind, made from dark nettle leaves.
💚Cream Tea
Well, not just found in Cornwall, obviously, but surely an indulgence not to be missed!
A freshly baked scone, a smothering of (homemade) jam with a dollop of cream on top. Delicious!
💚Hevva Cake
Sometimes called the Cornish heavy cake, this indulgent dish includes lard, flour, butter, milk, sugar and raisins.
With links to the fishing industry, the cake traditionally has a criss-cross pattern on top (symbolic of the fishing nets).
💚Pilchards
An oily fish, sometimes called the Cornish sardine, these silver-scaled creatures have formed a huge part of Cornwall’s heritage, with numerous delightful fishing villages making a living at one time or another from catching them. Great grilled!
💚Saffron Bun
A rich bun including currants and with the distinctive yellow colour that is derived from using the spice saffron.
Saffron is most expensive spice in the world and has a distinctive metallic flavour.
💚Stargazy (or starrey gazey) Pie
Could be considered an acquired taste – pilchards, egg and potatoes, covered with a pastry ‘lid’ before being baked to perfection.
The pilchard’s heads are supposed to peer out of the pie crush, too.

⭐Now all you need to do is visit us and enjoy this edible delights!

A Bookworm’s Guide to Cornwall – Five Ways to be Inspired!

For an epic saga on both page and screen, Poldark is hard to beat.
The original novels are penned by Winston Graham, filmed in the 1970s with Robin Ellis in the lead role. The BBC recently rehashed the series with Aidan Turner starring as Ross Poldark.
Starting in the late 1700s, this vast story of love, betrayal and copper mines captures the endless intricacy of Cornish politics and history.

Rebecca
An enduring Gothic tale of mystery, love and the power of the sea are beautifully captured in Rebecca, written by Daphne du Maurier.

Set around the 1930s era, this tale about mysterious lady of the manor Rebecca de Winter has unexpected twists and turns. Several films and television versions have been created but the book is by far the best way to enjoy this classic tale.

The Shell Seekers by Rosamunde Pilcher tells the story of Penelope Keeling, who, following a bout of illness, examines her past against the stunning backdrop of the Cornish countryside and coast. The book was nominated by the British public in 2003 as one of the top 100 novels in the BBC’s Big Read and takes its title from a painting featured in the plot.

If you love a bit of mystery, then The Lighthouse by PD James is one for you. Part of the Adam Dalgliesh series, the detective investigates the death of a famous writer on a remote and inaccessible island off the Cornish Coast.
This particular ‘episode’ of the Dalgliesh mysteries was published in 2005 and an absorbing page-turner with Cornwall as one of its key themes.

And it’s not just grown-up authors who’ve been inspired by Cornwall! The Mousehole Cat, written by Antonia Barber, is an atmospheric tale of Old Tom, a Cornish fisherman, and his cat Mowzer, who bravely faces the wrath of Great Storm-Cat in order to save their village. With beautiful illustrations by Nicola Bayley, this is a classic tale for younger (and older!) fans of Cornwall and it’s complex maritime heritage.

Stone Circules near Penbugle ...

The Hurlers Stones
The Hurlers Stones are a close grouping of three running from the northeast to the southwest, something that is extremely rare in England. Their shapes are also very regular which makes them unique.
The monument was excavated in the 1930s and the site also has two outlying upright stones called the Pipers.
When you get close to the stones, you can detect they were hammered smooth by our ancestors, all those centuries ago.

If you love these magnificent markers of history, there are several other places to visit within a short distance.

Trethevy Quoit
The Trethevy Quoit at St Cleer, Liskeard is just less than two miles from the Hurlers and again is free to enter.
This is a Neolithic ‘dolmen’ burial chamber standing at 2.7 metres high, comprising of five standing stones and a huge capstone.

King Deniert’s Stone
Just over two miles from the Hurlers and again close to St Cleer, you will find King Doniert’s Stone 9th century richly carved pieces of a Celtic cross commemorating Dungarth, King Of Dumnonia, who drowned in around 875 AD.
There is a small layby in which you can park right next to the site and the postcode is PL14 6EG.
Both these incredible pieces of history are managed by the Cornwall Heritage Trust.
There is something mysterious and all encompassing about stone monuments. It is awe-inspiring to think these stunning artefacts will be here forever and will continue to entice and attract people to them in equal measure.

Duloe Stone Circle
And recently, Cornwall’s smallest stone circle has joined the Cornwall Heritage Trust: the Duloe Stone Circle is an ancient site at the southern end of Duloe village, between Liskeard and Looe.
It is managed by CHT on behalf of the Duchy of Cornwall.
CHT protect 16 historic places across Cornwall
The Duloe Stone Circle was first recorded in 1801 and a Bronze Age urn, containing cremated human bones, was found in the mid-nineteenth century.
