Walk with the Foundation:24in12 Get Fit Charity Walk
Next walk Saturday 17th June 2018
Fort William to Glencoe - 24 miles in 12 hrs. We managed to raise just under £10,000 in total.

West Lothian Youth Foundation (WLYF), in conjunction with NHS Lothian and The SPFL Trust have delivered a Football Fans in Training (FFIT) programme to various groups since 2015. FFIT was all about increasing the mobility, fitness and diet of the participants, in particular through walking and football, with the initiative proving to be extremely successful. As a group WLYF and FFIT discussed doin

g something ‘challenging’ that all FFIT participants could use as ongoing motivational tool and we decided on a 24 miles walk, from Fort William to the Glencoe Ski resort. The 24 mile walk was to be completed in a target time of 12 hours or less. After discussions with the FFIT participants, WLYF decided to use this walk as our major fundraising initiative for 2016 and it was agreed to extend participation to the wider WLYF ‘family’, meaning anyone associated with the Foundation could take part. This included anyone wishing to improve their fitness and health, or just walk! The Foundation extended our fundraising efforts with another charity called DadsWork. One of our original FFIT participants worked for 9and still does) the charity and to reward him for his efforts the funds raised from Walk with the Foundation: 24 in 12 were shared with ‘DadsWork’

2016 was our inaugural event and was extremely successful. We are delighted to announce that event will be an annual occurrence with this years walk taking place on the 24th of June 2017. So what are you waiting for, sign up for the challenge!

It's the morning after this years challenge and we are sure there will be a few sore legs out there after the fantastic efforts by our walkers!

This is the third year that we have completed this challenge and we are always blown away by the commitment and effort our walkers show to complete the full 24 mile West Highland Way course.

The weather was horrendous yesterday but that didn't stop our walkers digging in and smashing the 12hr target.

The team spirit from the group of walkers was fantastic with everyone staying to cheer the last walkers through the finish line.

A special mention to our support team who once again were a key part to the whole event, from making the walkers food, handing out water bottles and providing that all important encouragement and motivation to finish the challenge.

You still have time to sponsor the walkers and any donation would be greatly appreciated.

Final Training Walk

We are only a few weeks away from the Walk with the Foundation: 24 in 12 Fundraising challenge!

The final training walk before the challenge is this Sunday, 27th May 2018!

The walk is a 20 mile walk up the Fife Coastal Path. This is a beautiful walk, where you come across fantastic scenery! Everyone who took part in this walk last year loved it and forecasts show, at the moment anyway, that the weather will warm and sunny!

Meeting point is a 08:30 start at North Queensferry Train Station and the walk will take 6-7 hours.

This walk does come with some difficulty though!
It is a long walk – and with the potentially warm weather conditions, you need to make sure that you eat and drink properly!

That means start drinking early BEFORE you feel thirsty.

Make sure that you wear/bring sun cream with you as with the sun plus the breeze there is a high chance you will burn.

There are one or two points through built up areas where the path is not as well signposted as we would hope – remember though keep the sea to your right and you can’t go far wrong.
The walk does go along the main road at some points – and mainly there is a pavement but take care, especially crossing the road and especially when you are tired.

You will be walking through some seaside towns such as Aberdour and Burntisland, which have newsagents to buy refreshments from if desired.
There are also a number of public toilets stops in these places.

The finishing point is Kirkcaldy Train Station. You need to make your own way back to Queensferry from Kirkcaldy but trains are frequent back to North Queensferry.

If you are attending the walk on Sunday can you please let me know.

Still time to sign up for the challenge on the 16th June!

**Training Walk 5 - The 5 Peaks!**

This next training walk for Walk with the Foundation takes places this Sunday! (6th May 2018).

We are back in the Pentlands and there is a slight increase in the challenge!
Meeting point is at the Threipmuir Car Park: Sunday 6th May at 08:20 for an 08:30 start. Car Park directions in link below:

https://www.google.co.uk/maps/place/Threipmuir+Reservoir+Car+Park/@55.8607455,-3.3327942,15z/data=!4m2!3m1!1s0x0:0xf679fcb332bb2220?sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiGg5vzquLaAhVMa8AKHQGTBfoQ_BIIrQEwCg

This is one of the toughest walks on the training - do this and you will go a long way to making sure you make it on the actual walk.

This walk has a gentle start going anti-clockwise round the loop, passing Threipmuir and Harlaw reservoirs and gently climbing up to the spectacular views at the Maidens Cleugh and then down to Flotterstone. Then you start the 5 peaks! This is a stunning skyline walk - with some of the best views in Scotland.

A word about food and drink management. This is a long walk and will take between 5-7 hours. Your body, no matter how fit you are, will run out of energy after about three hours if you don't top up the food early enough. We recommend that you stop at least twice for a food top up and you need to make sure you carry enough water to see you to the end. Forecast for Sunday is a sunny day with highs of 16C so heat management and liquid management is essential so that you don't run out of energy. Remember having something to eat and drink at the end, combined with good food and liquid management, is the best way to recover quickly from the walk. (Please also bring sun-screen or a hat - it might feel cool but you can easily get burnt under those conditions).

Training Walk 4 - Sunday 22nd April 2018 & Registration/Accomodation

Due to bad weather earlier this year, as well as the main event taking place a week earlier, we have had re-adjust the training schedule .

We are keen that you get the right training to prepare but time is against us.
We had planned a walk up West Lomond for the 22nd April (this Sunday) but that walk will now been changed to the Loch Leven Circular. This is a 13 mile flat walk.

Our main reason for the change of route is that we only have one organiser is available as Scott is at a family event and, unfortunately Peter is still unavailable due to his knee. The West Lomond route is more challenging but has some navigational challenges whereas with the Loch Leven Walk is easy (at least Navigationally).

After this week we only have 2 more organised training walks:
- The Pentland 5 peaks on the 6th May
- The 20mile Coastal Walk and 27th May
- Then the challenge on the 16th June.

The starting point for the Loch Leven Circular on Sunday 22nd April is the Findatie Caravan Park (Loch Leven Lodges) on the B9097 and be there for 8:15 for a 8:30 start.

Given that Kevin is leading this it would be great if you could email us back to let us know if you are definitely attending or not as this would be helpful.

Registration/Accommodation

If you have yet to register/make payment for the walk we ask that you do this as soon as possible.

In terms, of accommodation, there are only a set number of beds available at the back packers in Fort William which will be allocated on a first come first served basis.

Again we will require you to make the £25 accommodation package as soon as possible to allow us to reserve you are bed.
